PDS CHALLENGES EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT VOTE, WHICH COULD HAVE DETRIMENTAL IMPACT ON VITAL MEDICAL RESEARCH
The Parkinson's Disease Society (PDS) has urged UK MEPs to reject the amendments proposed in two Reports by the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Policy Committee and Legal Affairs Committee on the European Commission’s draft Tissue and Cells Directive. The PDS is concerned that, if passed by the European Parliament, this series of amendments would have a detrimental impact on vital medical research that could lead to new treatments and possibly a cure for Parkinson’s disease. more...

Parkinson's disease is a common progressive neurological disorder that results from degeneration of nerve cells in a region of the brain that controls movement. This degeneration creates a shortage of the brain-signaling chemical (neurotransmitter) known as dopamine , causing impaired movement. It is most commonly characterized by tremors in the arms and legs, muscle stiffness, rigidity , and slowness of movement. Within this site you will find annotated resource listings , basic information on Parkinson's Disease, answers to frequently asked questions , the latest developments in scientific research , what's new in the media about Parkinson's Disease and much more. Important Safety Considerations: The use of MIRAPEX can cause drowsiness and the possibility of suddenly falling asleep during daily activities, which could result in an accident while driving. The most common side effects of MIRAPEX are nausea, sleeplessness, constipation, involuntary movement, dizziness upon standing, and hallucinations.

... Medication : "The information on this website is for your interest only. For medical advice for your individual needs, please see your doctor or other health professional." Introduction Parkinsons disease is quite common. The condition generally develops very slowly. It affects between 1 and 2 people per thousand of the whole population and approxiamately 10 per thousand of those over 60.
Parkinsons is a progressive neuro-degenerative disorder which affects movement or the control of movement. With good medical treatment Parkinsons has a limited affect, if any, on life expectancy but it can be disabling. With a positive outlook, good medical care and good support from other resources, most people with Parkinsons can lead a productive life for many years after diagnosis. Top The Main Symptoms of Parkinsons Tremor About 75% of people develop a tremor at the onset of their illness. However, a number of people with Parkinsons never develop a tremor. The tremor tends to occur when the limb is relaxed and tends to disappear when performing tasks. Stiffness Stiffness or rigidity is often detected by the examining doctor and can contribute to deep aching sensations felt in the limbs.

Please Remind Me

When my mind seems to treadmill, remind me that You are not the author of confusion. Please give me peace.
When my stomach rolls, my heart pounds, and fear changes the taste in my mouth,
You have not given the spirit of fear, but power and love and a steadfast mind. Please take my fear. There do not seem to be any easy answers. Perhaps no answers now at all except to trust. I need help even with trusting. I am trying to walk. Please light my path and direct my steps. When the clouds hide the sun, remind me that it is still shining. You are the light of the world.

Many Patients with Parkinson's Disease Opt for Alternative Therapies
NEW YORK, Sep 10 Praxis Press Among patients with Parkinsons disease, patients using alternative therapies are younger, more affluent, and more educated than patients who do not use these therapies, according to an observational study published in Neurology. Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University questioned 201 patients with Parkinsons disease about their use of alternative therapies and determined factors associated with this use. Overall, 40% of the patients reported using at least one alternative therapy; among these patients, 26% used two therapies, 33% used three or more therapies, and 12% used five or more therapies. The most commonly used alternative therapies were vitamins and herbs (especially vitamin E), massage, and acupuncture. The patients' interest in the use of alternative therapies had most often been prompted by the advice of a family member or friend (48%) or the media (23%). Fifty-eight percent of patients had not consulted the physician treating their Parkinsons disease before starting the use of these therapies. Compared with nonusers of alternative therapies, users were significantly younger at the time of the study and at the time of disease onset, with the age at onset showing the strongest association. Users were also significantly more likely to have an income exceeding $60,000 per year and to be college graduates. Users were more likely than nonusers to be married, although this association was of borderline significance. A variety of other factors studied were not associated with the use of alternative therapies: sex, race, severity of Parkinsons disease, duration of disease, duration of treatment with levodopa, surgery for the disease, or the presence of fluctuating disease.

Parkinson's Disease
Definition
Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by an insidious onset with slowing of emotional and voluntary movement, muscular rigidity, postural abnormality and tremor. Parkinson's disease was first described in 1817 by James Parkinson in a paper entitled "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy" photos courtesy of the National Library of Medicine ). It is a common neurological disorder with a prevalence of 1-2 per 1000 overall. However the incidence rises after the age of 50, such that 1-2% of the elderly in the UK are affected. The disease is due to the striatal deficiency of dopamine following neuronal degeneration within the substantia nigra. Diagnosis
The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is generally a clinical one (see CLINICAL FEATURES listed below), however modern imaging techniques may have a role in the future in differentiating different Parkinsonian syndromes or in the pre-clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. For example, by using fluoro-dopa PET imaging , one can clearly see in the Parkinsonian patient the markedly impaired fluoro-dopa uptake in the region of the caudate and putamen.

Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a neurosurgical procedure that utilizes a specific dose of gamma radiation to destroy a brain abnormality. The procedure was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989.
Gamma Knife technology allows for surgery without a scalpel or incision. With extreme precision, physicians are able to operate on the brain or skull with minimal risk of surgical complication and with less damage to the surrounding tissue. Also, because surgical incision is not required, the risks usually involved with brain surgery, such as hemorrhage or infection are nearly eliminated. While individual patient outcomes may vary, patients may resume their normal lifestyle, the very next day. Gamma knife is a unique and advanced treatment superior to the traditional procedure of brain surgery in selected neurological disorders. MORE
