    Information About Pakistan Page
Introduction Background: The separation in 1947 of British India into the Muslim state of Pakistan (with two sections West and East) and largely Hindu India was never satisfactorily resolved. A third war between these countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan seceding and becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. A dispute over the state of Kashmir is ongoing. In response to Indian nuclear weapons testing, Pakistan conducted its own tests in 1998. How Pakistan Got Its Name
The name of the country Pakistan has a fascinating history -
    it is essentially an acronym!
Prior to 1947, the country now known as Pakistan was a British colony.
In 1947 the United Kingdom granted independence to the region under
a new name, Pakistan. The name had been developed by a group of
students at Cambridge University who issued a pamphlet in 1933 called
Now or Never. They came up with the term "Pakistan" as
"composed of letters taken from the names of our homelands:

Geography of Terrorism Afghanistan The U.S.S.R. invaded Afghanistan (1979-1989) to protect the civilian regime from overthrow by several militant mujahideen , supplied and supported by the U.S. over the Pakistani border. Political chaos followed the Soviet withdrawal and the fundamentalist Taliban eventually gained control. Only Pakistan Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirate have recognized the Taliban as the legal government of Afghanistan. Iran Known as Persia until 1935, Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 when the U.S. under Carter withdrew support for the current shah Reza Pahlavi. Militant Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979 and held it until January 20, 1981. Iran is currently ruled by a conservative clerical government that supports various terrorist groups. [LOC Country Study] Iraq Iraq gained its independence from Turkey in 1932. Since 1958 it has been controlled by the military, the latest being Saddam Hussein. Attempts at territorial expansion led to a costly war with Iran (1980-1988) and the Gulf War with the U.S when it seized Kuwait. It is now under U.N. sanctions which make it strongly anti-U.S. [LOC Country Study] Israel Following World War II, the British withdrew from Palestine and the U.N. partitioned it into Arab and Jewish sectors over vociferous objections by the Arabs. In 1967 Israel expanded its territories at the expense of Palestine, Egypt

The country borders Iran on the west, India in the east, Afghanistan in the north and north-west and the People's Republic of China in the north-west to north-east. Pakistan is a land of many splendors. The scenery changes northward from coastal beaches, lagoons and mangrove swamps in the south to sandy deserts, desolate plateaus, fertile plains, and dissected upland in the middle and high mountains with beautiful valleys, snow-covered peaks and eternal glaciers in the north. The variety of landscape divides Pakistan into six major regions: the North High Mountainous Region, the Western Low Mountainous Region, the Balochistan Plateau, the Potohar Upland, the Punjab and the Sindh Plains. South of the high mountains, the ranges lose their height gradually and settle down finally in the Margalla hills (2,000 - 3,000 ft) in the vicinity of Islamabad.

Multiple-Choice Question 4: Which of the following pieces of national territory could NOT have been classified as an exclave?
  • East Pakistan in 1947
  • This choice is incorrect because East Pakistan was an exclave in 1947. Geographers describe an exclave as a small area separated from the main part of the country. Although separate, East Pakistan was a part of Pakistan in 1947.

The flag was designed by Ali Jinnah, who founded Pakistan. The Pakistani flag is green and white. A white crescent moon and a five-pointed star are on a green field; a white stripe by the hoist side represents the nation's minority non-Muslim population. The crescent and star are traditional symbols of the Islamic religion. The star symbolizes light and knowledge; the crescent moon symbolizes progress. The height of this flag is two-thirds the width.
