My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece. Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

The Greek athletic games, otherwise commonly recognized as the Panhellenic Games, were an integral part of Greek life. They combined religion, sport, and music into extravagant festivals involving peoples throughout Mediterranean. Not only did they attract thousands of participants and spectators to their venues, but they also promoted solidarity among the various Greek city-states. By the Classical period, their influence was felt throughout Greece. There were four main games: the Olympic Games, Pythian Games, Nemean Games, and Isthmian Games. The games at Olympia were the oldest and most famous of these. They all began quite humbly as religious ceremonies. While the games had a small religious aspect throughout their history, this role diminished as time progressed. Mythological evidence suggests that the athletic events originally served as entertainment for humans and gods and were loosely associated with sacrificial offerings. At first they were purely local events most likely spanning two or three days, consisting only of dancing, running, and wrestling. The centrepiece of every Olympics is the track and field stadium. Stadium Australia has built the largest Olympic arena in history with 110,000 spectators able to see the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field program and the final of the men's soccer tournament. Under an agreement brokered by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority, the majority of the cost of the $A615 million stadium is being borne by the private sector with the NSW public having ultimate ownership of the venue. Stadium Australia has already hosted several world-class events including top-flight rugby league and union, American NFL and the FIFA All Stars.

A Brief Overview of Olympic History The Olympic Games is the largest sporting event in the world. It is constantly growing and changing to fit the needs of a changing society (meaning the entire world). Each celebration brings more nations and more athletes to the Games. In the beginning there were only a few hundred athletes, today there are over 10,000 athletes. In the first few Olympic Games there were very few women athletes because they were not welcome, today almost half the athletes are women. The Modern Olympic Games started in 1896 in Athens, Greece and the 100th anniversary, the Centennial Games, were in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia. The last summer Olympic Games were held in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. The next summer Olympic Games will be in Athens, Greece in 2004. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games were celebrated in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The Winter Olympic Games only started in 1924 and are not considered part of the OLYMPIAD, the four year time period between the Games. This special recognition is only for the summer Games, which are more important and have higher participation numbers in both number of countries and athletes. The Modern Olympic Games are not hosted by a country, but they are hosted by a city. The recent Olympic Games were not the "American" Olympic Games, they were the "SALT LAKE CITY" Olympic Games.

The ancient Olympic Games were always in the same place OLYMPIA a sacred city in western Greece known as ELIS . The Games were a religious event, a FESTIVAL that honored the Greek God ZEUS . The ancient Games were hosted by the ELIANS who were the guardians of the sanctuary to Zeus. They tried and succeeded for most of a thousand years to be neutral , that is, un-allied to other Greek city-states, similar to modern day Switzerland. The modern Games (just like the ancient Games) are QUADRENNIAL, meaning they are held every four years. This four year period of time is known as an OLYMPIAD . To the ancient Greeks it (an OLYMPIAD) was their calender, a way of designating time. Just as in ancient Greece, the modern Olympic Games are held every fourth year at the end of the Olympiad. The Games of the First Modern Olympiad were in 1896, in Athens, Greece. However, during the early years of the Modern Olympic Movement there was a disagreement over who should host the Olympic Games. The Greek Government wanted the Games in Athens permanently while Pierre de Coubertin, the French "founder" of the Modern Olympic Games, wanted the Games to rotate around the world to major sporting cities. So the Olympic Games of the second Olympiad were held in Paris, France and the Games of the third Olympiad were in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The Greeks went ahead and scheduled their own Olympic Games in 1906, a tenth anniversary celebration of the 1896 Games. At that time these Games were considered "official," in spite of the calender - not being a

The Summer Olympics Games History 1896 was the first of the Modern Olympic Games is all mentioned above. These games were held in Athens, Greece. Only men competed in these Olympic games. These games were held in Paris, France, there were 1,225 athletes from 26 nations. This was the first Olympics in which women were allowed to compete and Britain's Charlotte Cooper won the singles and mixed doubles in tennis. During these Olympics no golds were given out, only silver with bronze for second. Roommates at the University of Pennsylvania Alvin Kraenzlein, Irving Baxter, and John Tewksbury and Purdue grad Ray Ewry dominated the track and field events. Out of 23 events, they won 5 seconds place medals, and 1 third place medal. Alvin Kraenzlein is the only person in history to have 4 indivdual medals in one Olympics. The 1904 Olympics were held in St. Louis, which were held in conjuntion with the centennial celebration of the Louisana Purchase. This year 500 of the 687 competitors were Americans and on 13 nations competed. 80% of the medals were won by Americans, 23 of 25 gold medals in the track and field events were won by Americans. The track and field team was lead by 5 triple-winners, Ray Ewry, Archie Hahn, Jim Lightbody, and Harry Hillman. Track and field events were really the only interesting events at the Olympics, and sometimes the marathon run would be exciting as well. After the disappointing Olympics in Paris and St. Louis, the IOC decided to have the games return to Athens for the "Intercalated Games" in 1906. These games would appear every 4 years between the Olympics year. They would be known as the interim years. 900 athletes attended from 20 countries in 1906. The US dominated the track and field events, with 11 out of 21 events won. For the first time, an offical American team was picked by the USCO. The Intercalated Games wer canceled due to political unrest and they never reappeared. Medals won at these games were considered unoffical by the IOC. Verner Järvinen was the first Finnish athlete to compete in the Olympics. He won the Greek-style discus throw and placed second in the freestyle discus throw. He returned home a national hero and inspired Finland to become a future Olympic power.
