    Summer Program
In partnership with five Athens County school districts, Kids on Campus is restructuring its programming for the summer session 2001. All school districts have a state mandate to provide summer enrichment programming, and in order to avoid duplication of effort, Kids on Campus and the school districts have designed a plan to optimize resources.

    Summer Academies
School districts will be holding summer school programs for kindergarten through third grade students. These summer programs have the support of funding sources such as the Reading Excellence grants (which Athens City and Nelsonville-York City Schools have been awarded), as well as the potential for America Reads and Ohio Reads grants for the remaining three districts. Kids on Campus will be working with both the Athens City and Nelsonville York City schools on summer programming through their Reading Excellence programs.
Intermediate Summer Academy Kids on Campus will host an Intermediate Summer Academy for 4th-6th graders on the campuses of Ohio University and Hocking College. The students will engage in four multi-disciplinary sessions per day, and be provided two meals and a snack.

    overview
USDA administers four domestic food assistance programs that exclusively or primarily serve the nutritional needs of children. The National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and the Summer Food Service Program together account for nearly a third of USDA's domestic food assistance outlays. The child nutrition programs work individually and in concert to provide a nutrition safety net for children. In fiscal 2001, USDA spent $10 billion on these programs, up $400 million, or 4.5 percent, from fiscal 2000. The Food Assistance and Nutrition Research Program at ERS studies and evaluates the child nutrition programs and other nutrition programs, including the Food Stamp Program and WIC . ERS also studies program outcomes vulnerable populations , the macroeconomy program operations and integrity , and domestic food security contents features

    Chronic Conditions
    Physical Activity and Nutrition
Updated February 2003 Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are behaviors that have an impact on health. Together, they are responsible for at least 300,000 preventable deaths each year. Regular physical activity provides short-term benefits, such as reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduces long-term risks for disability and premature death. Despite the proven benefits of being physically active, more than 60 percent of American adults do not engage in levels of physical activity necessary to provide health benefits ( see postcard ). Good nutrition lowers a person's risk for many chronic diseases. However, a considerable gap remains between recommended dietary patterns and what Americans actually eat. Only about one-fourth of U.S. adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
