Margaret Powell Honored by Ohio Government Documents Round Table For more information, contact: John Finn FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 21, 2002 Margaret Powell WOOSTER, Ohio - Margaret S. Powell, Government Information Librarian Emerita at The College of Wooster, received the Ohio Government Documents Round Table (OH GODORT) award for outstanding achievement and service in the Federal Depository Library Program at its recent spring meeting. Powell is the seventh recipient of the award, which was established by the organization in 1988 and informally known as "The Clyde" in honor of its first recipient, Clyde Hordusky, former documents specialist at the State Library of Ohio. The award honors Powell's long-time contributions to the government documents community in Ohio, nationally, and internationally. She has published widely in the field. The nominating letter recognizes her as an "excellent documents reference librarian, a willing and helpful resource person, a gifted editor, and a colleague with great vision, energy, and enthusiasm." "Margie Powell is known throughout the Government Documents community for her unflagging and enthusiastic commitment to excellence and service," said Damon Hickey, Director of Libraries at Wooster. "She played a major role in the cataloging of Wooster's own Government Documents collection and in the cataloging of many of the older Government Documents in the libraries of the Five Colleges of Ohio-a project for which the consortium won national recognition. Her winning 'The Clyde' is an appropriate honor to top off her outstanding career."

Five Colleges of Ohio Government Documents Group Honored
WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster's lead role in cataloging government publications has been acknowledged in a recent award presented by the Government Documents Round Table of the American Library Association. The 2000 Bernadine Abbott Hoduski Founders Award has been presented to the Government Documents Group of The Five Colleges of Ohio, Inc., citing their pioneering work in the retrospective cataloging of historical Federal Depository publications. Members of this consortium of five liberal arts colleges in Ohio are Wooster, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, and Ohio Wesleyan University. The Hoduski Founders Award is presented each year to librarians who work with government documents and who have made significant contributions to the field of international, federal, state, or local documents. The award honors those whose contributions have benefited not only the individual's institution but also the profession. The five colleges have strong historical collections of U.S. Government publications; four have served as Federal Depository Libraries since the nineteenth century. Ohio Wesleyan University was designated as Ohio's first depository library in 1875. Because these early collections were not cataloged, access was limited and few users were aware of their existence. As early as 1985, Ohio documents staff members were discussing the importance of cataloging government materials to improve public access.

U.S. and Ohio Government Publications in the University Libraries
Overview
The University Libraries participate in several programs to make government information available to the general public. The Libraries select approximately 61% of the series of publications available through the Federal Depository Library Program and receive Ohio government publications under the state of Ohio's depository program . For information on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Depository Collection, go to Patents and Trademarks in the University Libraries Resources available include publications in a variety of subjects and formats. Most government publications are housed in the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library. Health-related publications are in the Fordham Health Sciences Library. In addition to books and periodicals, the collection includes CD-ROMs and diskettes containing government-produced information. Much government information is also available through the Internet. Following government regulations, resources received through these depository library programs are available for free use by all members of the community. Some materials are available for in-library use only, but many items may be checked out by anyone who has a borrower's card. Users of electronic government resources have priority use of workstation 224 on the second floor of Dunbar Library. Electronic products not supported in the Libraries can be checked out without paying a fee for a borrower's card. Although Internet access in general is available only to Wright State faculty, staff, and students, as part of the University Libraries' service as a depository library, Internet sites produced by federal and Ohio government agencies are available to all library users. In addition, access is provided to selected other sites with important government information.
