Introduction
As in many other cities, Dayton, Ohio faces its share of educational challenges. Far too few students, particularly low-income and minority students, are graduating from high school, and many of those who do are not prepared for college or for today's jobs. Dayton parents and community members are hungry for education reform and for new school options. A recent survey ( "Dayton Education in 2001: The Views of Citizens and Parents" ) published by this foundation shows that Dayton private and charter school parents are far more satisfied than public school parents with the academic program, discipline, safety, and teacher quality at their child's school. More than half of private school parents give their child's school an "A" grade, as do 42% of charter parents, but just 23% of public school parents award this top mark to their child's school. According to the survey, two-thirds of Daytonians favor maintaining and/or expanding charter schools. A clear majority (including three-quarters of public school parents) favor government-funded vouchers. More than four out of five believe that children should be required to meet higher academic standards in order to be promoted or to graduate.

Parents
How do I know if my child is gifted?
There are several methods of identifying gifted children including reports from teachers, student products, school achievement, standardised testing of intelligence and creativity and, importantly, parental observations. No two gifted children are alike but they often share some characteristics. A checklist of behavioural characteristics may highlight a child's strengths in one or more areas. Examples of appropriate checklists for teachers, parents and students are available in the Gifted Education Resource Book-Education of Gifted Students. back to top
What can I do to help my child?
Parents of gifted students can support and assist them in many ways including providing them with resources and materials so that they can investigate areas that interest them. This may mean assisting them to gain information by visiting the library, museums, art galleries, concerts, community agencies and special events. Exposing gifted children to a variety of experiences is an important way parents can support their children. Parents of gifted children play a crucial role in supporting their children to adjust socially and emotionally. Gifted children may need help to cope with their superior ability and to recognise their limitations. Often their ability levels vary and while they may be gifted in some areas they may have average abilities in others. Parents need to be aware of this and be available to support their child in need. However, gifted children need time to reflect or daydream so it is important not to timetable every minute of their day.
