Located in Dana Pt., 'the Ocean Institute is a laboratory for the creation, testing, and dissemination of new ideas, strategies, and technologies for teaching and learning. The Institute is a leader, serving as a resource to museums, school districts, teachers, and others who seek to enhance and strengthen an educational program. The curriculum crosses all traditional disciplines, but draws heavily from history and the sciences using content derived from the ocean.'
  • The Ocean Project - 'We are a new initiative that intends to create in people a lasting, measurable, top-of-mind awareness of the importance, value, and sensitivity of the oceans. We believe that the single greatest impediment to healthy and productive marine and coastal areas is the public's low level of ocean awareness. Through unprecedented collaboration among aquariums, zoos, science, technology, and natural history museums, and other educational institutions that together serve more than 100 million visitors each year, The Ocean Project aims to significantly increase the success of ocean conservation. We will also collaborate with local, regional, and national nonprofit conservation and environmental organizations to actively involve people in conservation activities in their communities and better connect them to the oceans.'

COMMITTEES ON BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF ATOMIC RADIATION, 1954-1964
The mission of the Committees on The Biological Effects of Atomic Radiation (BEAR) was to provide a thorough review of all that was known at the time about the effects of atomic radiation on living organisms. The Committees on BEAR had been put together in 1955 by then-NAS president Detlev Bronk in response to the increasing but uncoordinated accumulation of data on the effects of atomic radiation. Six committees were formed to investigate various problems arising from the release or presence of radiation in the environment. These committees were: Pathologic Effects of Atomic Radiation (with various subcommittees); Meteorological Aspects of the Effects of Atomic Radiation; Effects of Atomic Radiation on Agriculture and Food Supplies; Disposal and Dispersal of Radioactive Wastes; and Oceanography and Fisheries. A number of reports, including two summary reports, the first released in 1956 and second released in 1960, were published by the various BEAR committees and subcommittees before the study was terminated in 1964. The studies conducted by the Committees on BEAR did not overlap with the studies conducted by the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission.

They will include the identified research programs and projects within the frame of an open and dynamic consultation process. In it the entities of the Scientific Sub-Commission of CONAAN will act as a moderators of the up to date efforts developed by Peru in Antarctica, with the purpose of treating them all in an integral and integrated manner.
PROANTARCYT 2000 - 2005 is trying to internationalize the Peruvian research programs and the researchers at the same level with the Antarctic Treaty countries and with the international consulting organizations and/or observers.
In this internationalization process, the permanent interaction and communication with the Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research (SCAR) is very important, particularly with the task groups of the mentioned organization, and the acquiring of the Full Membership of SCAR category represents a priority for Peru.
The National Council of Science and Technology (CONCYTEC), as a National Organization presiding the Scientific Sub-Commission of the National Commission of Antarctic Affairs (CONAAN) has set up the following course to be followed for the development of the Antarctic Scientific and Technological Research Program (PROANTARCYT) in Antarctica, for the next years (2002 - 2007):
1. Emphasize the incorporation of Peruvian Universities in research projects.

    Such initiative has been set in a moment of profitable collaboration between the two Countries by visits between the respective Ministries of Research (from which has emerged a common strategy in relation to the individual objectives with regards to national programs of research) and with stronger ties of collaboration between universities, centers of research and firms. The Conference aimed to satisfy the following objectives: to create a strong synergy between the academic worlds and the centers of public and private research of the two Countries. In particular, the Italian technical science was presented as a partner able to promote a significant flow of students and researchers in the respective areas of excellence. In fact, on particular themes, Italy could be a valid alternative to the natural attraction that American, or in general the Anglo-Saxon Universities exert over Australia; to respond to the current needs of research and innovation of the firms of the two Countries and, at the same time, address the commercialization of the specific research outcomes towards a vast entrepreneurial network;

A bilateral scientific-technological cooperation (WTZ) with the Universitas Syiah Kuala, Darussalam - Banda Aceh, Sumatra / Indonesia. Scientific Coordinator:
    Deputy: Peter Damm
    Research Scientist: Thomas Pohlmann Dagmar Hainbucher
    Summary:
    The focus of the project is the description and analysis of the physical aspects of the system Malacca Strait / Andaman Sea, namely the circulation, the mass transport and the interaction between both regions. In this project the well-established approach of numerical modelling will be employed. For initializing and for providing the models with boundary values, data sets will be used which are already available. The German partner will contribute to this task with personnel and instrumentation. The modelling will be performed on two scales. The larger scale will investigate the general circulation (summer and winter monsoon, long-term variability and flushing times of mass transport). The smaller scale will study fronts (tidal induced, density induced, variations of fronts in time and space).
