he term SONAR refers to Sound Navigation and Ranging . As early as Daniel Colladen , a Swiss physicist, had used an underwater bell in an attempt to calculate the speed of sound in the waters of Lake Geneva. Other early attempts at mapping the ocean-floor basing on simple echo-sounding methods were nevertheless unrewarding. Lord Rayleigh in England published in the famous treatise " The Theory of Sound " in which the fundamental physics of sound vibrations (waves), transmission and refraction were clearly delineated. The breakthrough in echo-sounding techniques came when the piezo-electric effect in certain crystals was discovered by Pierre Curie and his brother Jacques Curie in France in They observed that an electric potential would be produced when mechanical pressure was exerted on a quartz crystal such as the Rochelle salt (sodium potassium tartrate tetrahydrate) and conversely, the application of an electric charge would produce deformation in the crystal and causing it to vibrate. It was then possible for the generation and reception of 'ultra'-sounds that are in the frequency range of millions of cycles per second (megahertz) which could be employed in echo sounding devices. Much research and development in piezo-electricity followed.

Our mission is to provide a structured educational environment and professional opportunities for the development of superbly trained physicians in general obstetrics and gynecology or the sub-specialties.
Introduction to the Residency Program
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Program at the New York University Hospitals Center is a four year training program consisting of twenty-nine residents. Appointments for the seven first year positions are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). An additional preliminary first year position is filled outside and after the match.
Residents who join the program receive a broad education covering primary women's health care, obstetrics, gynecology and the subspecialties. The housestaff is under the supervision of faculty renowned for their clinical care, as well as basic scientific research. The component hospitals each have distinct characteristics. The combination of a large municipal hospital with a diverse population, and an adjacent large private university referral center drawing patients from a wide geographic area, provides an enviable mix of medical, surgical, sociological, obstetrical and gynecological problems that cannot be found under the roof on any single institution.
