National Call to Congress:
It's Time to Reinvest in Our Children Priorities for Child Nutrition Reauthorization February 6, 2003 - The American School Food Service Association is appealing to organizations to sign the "National Call to Congress" in an effort to get Congress and the Administration to provide new federal funding for child nutrition programs. The Administration and Congress are called upon to take two critical steps:
  • Enact a Reauthorization bill that updates, expands participation in and enhances nutrition quality in the child nutrition programs Allocate in the budget sufficient new funds to achieve these goals
  • The goal is to get ten thousand organizations to sign on to the "Call." At a minimum, ASFSA would like to receive a commitment from at least one organization in every congressional district in the country. Examples of groups that can sign on include
    • National organizations such as America’s Second Harvest and the National Education Association State affiliates of national organizations L ocal groups such as churches, PTAs, school districts, community-based non-profits, or ASFSA chapters

    "Promoting Healthy Eating: An Investment
    in the Future—A Report to Congress"
    The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has sent to Congress a report fulfilling the request accompanying the Agriculture Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2000, P.L. 106-78 for a report on "a comprehensive, integrated approach to nutrition education as a complement to the various nutrition assistance programs." In accordance with the Congressional direction, FNS consulted with Federal health agencies and professional nutrition organizations in developing this report. The report focuses on issues that require congressional action and concludes that the Nation must enhance the investment in nutrition education in order to promote food security, avoid preventable deaths, eliminated nutrition-related health disparities, and reduce the potential society cost of the obesity epidemic. The needed changes can only be achieved through a sustained, integrated, long-term nutrition education effort.

    Schools Summit, an outcome of a groundbreaking collaboration of more than 35 nationaleducation, physical activity, health, and nutrition organizations.
    http://www.nationaldairycouncil.org/lvl04/nutrilib/digest/dairydigest_742.html
    SUMMARY The health of our nation's children is in jeopardy. The prevalence of overweight among young people has doubled in recent decades. Many children are physically inactive. Also, a large proportion of children's energy intake comes from the tip of the Food Guide Pyramid (i.e., fats, oils, and sweets). This reflects a poor dietary pattern resulting in nutrient deficiencies. Declining consumption of milk among children has adverse nutritional and health consequences. Milk is a nutrient dense food rich in calcium and an important source of other essential nutrients. Low intake of milk is associated with poor bone health and increased risk of osteoporosis and other chronic conditions in later years. Schools are an ideal setting to help children gain the knowledge, skills, and motivation to establish a healthy dietary pattern and to be physically active. Recognition of the health crisis facing the nation's children led to the Healthy Schools Summit , an outcome of a groundbreaking collaboration of more than 35 national education, physical activity, health, and nutrition organizations. The Summit , with help from partner organizations, launched Action for Healthy Kids State Teams. Each of the state teams has assessed their state's needs and developed their State Action Plan, selecting two to three actions from the "Commitment to Change." This guidance document, adapted by the Summit collaborators from the Surgeon General's

      This publication is a list of organizations that provide free or low-cost food and nutrition materials for consumers. The Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) receives many requests for materials to distribute at health fairs, classes, physicians' offices, wellness programs, and other locations. Since FNIC is not a clearinghouse and has a limited number of publications to distribute in bulk, the Center has developed this publication to help others locate free and low-cost food and nutrition materials. The list is alphabetical and divided into four sections: 1) Nutrition, Medical, and Health Organizations; 2) Food-Related Associations; 3) Food Companies; and 4) Food Service-Related Organizations. When materials are available in non-English languages, the languages are listed in parenthesis after the name of the organization. The languages are abbreviated as follows: A = Arabic
      C = Cambodian
      Ch = Chinese
      D = Dutch
