Yoruba speaking peoples originally hale from West Africa, more specifically the area around modern day Nigeria. “Juba’lee” is made up of two Yoruba words: “ju iba” and “ile” or “lee”. Ju iba or juba means to pay homage or make reverence to someone, usually a senior or superior such as a chief, king, elder, ancestor or deity. It is customary for singers, entertainers, praise-singers, drummers, ritualists and others to first "juba" or "ju iba"(pay homage) to the powers-that-be, past and present rulers, other notable living or dead entertainers, and/or deities, before starting their own performances. The word “Juba-Lee” can be interpreted to mean to pay homage to the earth or one’s house, home, roots or land of origin.* Juba’lee was a celebration unlike any other ever staged in Nova Scotia, probably even in Canada! The spotlight shone on the rich culture and heritage of Nova Scotia’s black community as part of Halifax and Dartmouth’s 250th birthdays, and the arrival of the millennium. Nova Scotia’s black heritage and incredible talent has been growing, largely out of view of the rest of the Province, for hundreds of years. On January 22, 2000 over 100 singers, dancers and musicians were brought to centre stage at the Halifax Metro Centre for one of the city’s largest musical extravaganzas ever.

(subtitled " Femme Micmac") In Nova Scotia, the most obvious and largest, being those people who became known as the Acadians. Adopting the best, and occasionally worst, aspects of both cultures, they carved out their niche in the country and reserved their place in history. During the Acadian Expulsion during the mid-1700's, many refused to leave their homes and land, and went deep into the forests of the interior to escape deportation. Their descendants have stayed together over the centuries in such communities as Tusket, Quinan and others around Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby Counties. Others fled to New Brunswick, Quebec and Maine. Many of the descendants of these individuals returned after 1765 to their beloved homeland of Nova Scotia.

The Sash The origins of the sash reflect the diversity of the Metis experience. The finger-weaving technique used to make the sash were firmly established in Eastern Woodland Indian traditions. The technique created tumplines, garters and other useful household articles and items of clothing. Plant fibres were used prior to the introduction of wool. Wool and the sash, as an article of clothing, were introduced to the Eastern Woodland people by Europeans. The Six Nations Confederacy, Potowatami and other Indian nations of the area blended the two traditions into the finger woven sash. The French settlers of Quebec created the Assomption variation of the woven sash. Sashes, such as the one illustrated, were a popular trade item manufactured in a cottage industry in the village of L'Assomption, Quebec. The Quebecois and the Metis of Western Canada were their biggest customers. Sashes were also made by local Metis artisans. Sashes of Indian or Metis manufacture tended to be of a softer and looser weave, frequently incorporating beads in the design. The sash was used by the Metis as a practical item of clothing. It was decorative, warm and could be used to replace a rope or tumpline if none were available. The sash has been the most persistent element of traditional Metis dress, worn long after the capote and Red River coat were replaced by European styles.

Destination Nova Scotia: Its Culture and Landscapes Photographs by Albert Lee Text by Alexa Thompson Nimbus Publishing - 64 pages Cost: $14.95 Softcover ISBN-551109-282-4 reviewed by Ronnie Scullion Albert Lee's mastery with the camera is evident in the richly textured
and inspired images he has gathered together for us in "Destination Nova Scotia: Its Culture and Landscapes". His photographic essay of the province draws on the diversity of the people and the colourful, changing vistas. As Lee comments in the Preface, "Destination
Nova Scotia is a very brief (and subjective) summary of only a few of my favourite sites across the province. Nova Scotia continues to be a destination for my camera and my heart."
Light and shadow dance across the pages. Patterns in the landscapes are evoked, suggestive of exotic fabrics, mosaic tiles or painted canvases.
Near the Scott paper mill in Pictou bright sunlight is reflected off the
waters forming a luminescent background against which the silhouettes of cormorants sitting atop pylons are set. Water and light are sharply contrasted, the resulting effect is a veined pattern suggestive of a decorative batik cloth. In another picture, the muted light and soft amber tones of sunset over a Musquodoboit lake become background to the long grasses and reeds in the shallow waters. The photograph has the distinct appearance of a pen and ink drawing.

Objective
The original exploreNS.com web site was created in 1995. Since that time, the primary goal of the site, which is the promotion of Nova Scotia as a tourist destination, has remained unchanged. However, as the online services of the site expanded to better serve their high volumes of internet traffic, the content, technology, and functionality necessary to achieve their goals required updating. The information and functionality of the site were still consistent with their goals, but it had reached a level where it needed to be re-designed in order to address the issues that a growing body of information and technology create. Solution
The foundation of this re-design began with an extensive analysis and re-development of the information architecture, in order to create a logical and intuitive navigational system. This change served the dual purpose of being easily modifiable, as the site continues to grow, thereby increasingly the longevity of the design, as well as improving the navigation for the frequent or first time web visitor. The site was then re-designed visually in order to create a modern appearance and an integrated marketing approach. www.novascotia.com

Aquaculture Centre Our Aquaculture Centre, which opened in May 2000 includes classrooms, labs, modern holding and research facilities and houses one of the most sophisticated water recirculating systems in Canada. Salinity, temperature, oxygenation, and light can all be controlled with precision, allowing us to rear the full spectrum of species from cold water marine fish and shellfish to tropical freshwater fish. On site we grow Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, Arctic char, American eels, and striped bass. We also rear true marine fish such as haddock and halibut. Our broodstocks enable students to understand spawning conditions required by various species In our shellfish section we culture oysters, clams, scallops, blue mussels, and other alternative species in specialized tank systems. A specialized algal culture laboratory provides food for shellfish. It also houses a sterile work environment for algal transfers and growth trails, and programmable growth chambers for culture research The teaching labs provide tightly controlled environments in which fresh or sea water species can be reared.

Halifax, February 2, 1998 ... - Members of Nova Scotia's arts and cultural industries are about to begin work on the first strategy to cover the entire sector. The new strategy will help the sector's diverse groups identify ways of working together to make the most of their potential. The Honourable Fred Mifflin , Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Honourable Manning MacDonald , Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, announced today that $104,000 will be allocated to the development of a Cultural Sector Strategy for Nova Scotia. The expansion of Nova Scotia's cultural community has accelerated rapidly over the past 10 years and is now widely recognized as one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the province. The Culture Sector Strategy will consist of a strategic plan that would establish common long term goals, maximize growth potential, clarify decision making policy and create new relationships and potential within the sector. "This strategy will help us pull together all the pieces of the Nova Scotia cultural mosaic," said
