On the map of the world you will see that Norway is situated far to the north in the western corner of Europe. Norway shares borders with Sweden, Finland and Russia, but our largest neighbour is the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Our country's official name is the Kingdom of Norway, which in addition to the mainland includes the Svalbard archipelago and Jan Mayen. Norway also has territories in the Antarctic region. These are Bouvet Island and Peter I Island. Geography Culture Society Environment ... Search

    Geography
25,000 years ago Norway was covered by ice 3-4 km thick. It took almost 18,000 years to melt. In Oslo, where Kari lives, the land has risen no less than 200 m since the Ice Age and it still rises a few millimetres each year. Large areas of Norway consist of forests and mountains. We generally divide the country into northern and southern Norway but geographically we can refer to 4 regions. Southeast Norway contains extensive areas of forest, gentle valleys and rich arable land. In the southwest, nature is more dramatic with deep fjords penetrating 200 km or more into the heart of the country where mountain glaciers lie. The central region also has fjords and a coastline but here the mountains are more gentle and there are also extensive lowland areas. In northern Norway the landscape is a mixture of valleys, fjords, mountains and islands. Climate
The climate in Norway varies a great deal from one region to another but the four seasons are distinct throughout the whole country. In the northernmost region, Finnmark, the temperature can vary from -52 degrees C in the winter to more than +30 degrees C in the summer. The coastal climate is one of mild winters and cool summers, while inland winters are cold and summers are hot. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream bring a mild climate to coastal areas and ensure ice-free harbours even in winter. Natural phenomena
    Wild life
Norway has a rich animal and plant life including Europe's only wild reindeer. There are elks and roe deer in the forests and also predators such as the brown bear, the wolf, the wolverine and the lynx. There are no polar bears in Norway itself but the Svalbard archipelago has plenty. The polar bear is the largest predatory animal in Europe. The mountains and lowlands are home to many different types of birds, and millions of sea birds hatch their eggs on the ocean cliffs. Our coastal waters are full of fish, and both whales and seals are a common sight.

    Geography and climate
Norway is a land of high mountains and fjords that cut far inland. Mountains cover large areas of the country and characteristic valleys stretch from the flatlands and the coast up to the mountains. Despite the fact that Norway is situated far to the north, it has mild winters due to the ocean and air currents in the North Atlantic (the Gulf Stream). However, there are major climatic differences between regions like Finnmark in the north, the west coast and eastern and southern Norway. In the west, the winter temperature seldom sinks below freezing, while in the interior of Finnmark it may fall as low as -50°C. Plant life is limited, as may be expected in a country so far north. Norway has less than 2,000 species of flowers. Deciduous forest, which needs a fairly warm climate, is found only in the lowlands of southern Norway while coniferous pine and spruce forests are found all over the country. Norway has a rich animal and bird life. It has Europe’s only flock of wild reindeer and there are large numbers of moose and deer in the forests. The other species in the Norwegian fauna include hare, fox, wolf, bear, lynx, deer, partridge, woodland birds, otter, beaver and mink. The sea eagle has long been threatened with extinction, but today nests in many places along the North-Norwegian coast. Most of the freshwater lakes in Norway are eldorados for sports fishermen, with large stocks of char and trout, perch, pike, gwyniad, grayling and burbot.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: Despite its neutrality, Norway was not able to avoid occupation by Germany in World War II. In 1949, neutrality was abandoned and Norway became a member of NATO. Discovery of oil and gas in adjacent waters in the late 1960s boosted Norway's economic fortunes. The current focus is on containing spending on the extensive welfare system and planning for the time when petroleum reserves are depleted. In referenda held in 1972 and 1994, Norway rejected joining the EU.

Our Norwegian Heritage Norway: Geography Overall Dimensions: From Northeast to Southwest, the length of Norway is approximately 1,100 miles. At the widest, the width is 267 miles. The coastline' length is almost impossible to measure as it is heavily indented with fjords and includes many islands. Norway covers an area slightly exceeding 125,000 square miles. Fjords: Fjords are ocean inlets that were caused by glacier movement. They often are deeper in their middle and upper reaches than at the ocean. The Oslo Fjord is on the southern coast of Norway. The Sogn Fjord on the west is Norways longest and deepest fjord and the Hardanger Fjord in the southwest is the second largest. Glaciers: There are probably over 1,500. glaciers in Norway today and they cover an area of over 1,000 square miles. These glaciers are NOT left over from the last ice-age but instead have mostly been formed in the last 2000 years with the size decreasing in the last century. Climate: Although it is essentially at the same latitude as Alaska, the Gulf Stream brings a warmer climate to Norway. This keeps the fjords from freezing, even in the Arctic Finnmark region. Even more important are the southerly air currents brought in above these warm waters, especially during the winter.
