Abstract: The Census Subdivisions Cartographic Boundary File for Canada contains the boundaries of all 5,600 census subdivisions (CSDs) for the 2001 Census. A census subdivision is a municipality or an area treated as equivalent to a municipality for statistical purposes (for example, Indian reserves and unorganized territories). Each CSD includes an attribute showing its classification according to the Statistical Area Classification (SAC). Under the SAC, each CSD is a component of either a census metropolitan area, a census agglomeration, a census metropolitan area and census agglomeration influenced zone (strongly influenced, moderately influenced, weakly influenced or not influenced), or a component of the territories (Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory). Coordinates: Latitude/Longitude (NAD83) Cartographic Boundary Files (CBFs) contain the boundaries of standard geographic areas together with the shoreline around Canada and the larger inland lakes, all integrated in a single layer. The coordinates are latitude/longitude and are based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The Cartographic Boundary Files for 2001 replace the Digital Cartographic Files produced for the 1996 Census. A reference guide is included.

    THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE
DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY Geography 2600 - Canada Some Introductory Notes Physical Base There are some two million freshwater lakes in Canada, covering about 7.6% of the Canadian landmass. The main lakes, in order of the surface area located in Canada (many large lakes are traversed by the Canada-U.S. border), are Huron, Great Bear, Superior, Great Slave, Winnipeg, Erie and Ontario. The largest lake situated entirely in Canada is Great Bear Lake (31 326 km2) in the Northwest Territories. The St. Lawrence (3058 km long) is Canada's most important river, providing a seaway for ships from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. The longest Canadian river is the Mackenzie, which flows 4241 km through the Northwest Territories. Other large watercourses include the Yukon and the Columbia (parts of which flow through U.S. territory), the Nelson, the Churchill, and the Fraseralong with major tributaries such as the Saskatchewan, the Peace, the Ottawa, the Athabasca, and the Liard. Canada has six time zones. The easternmost, in Newfoundland, is three hours and 30 minutes behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The other time zones are the Atlantic, the Eastern, the Central, the Rocky Mountain and, farthest west, the Pacific, which is eight hours behind GMT.

Geography for writers Geography can really perplex a writer, not so much because of the mountains and lakes themselves, but because we're always renaming everything. Then there are confusing bits. Granada is in Spain, for example, while Grenada is in the Caribbean. This essay will help you stay current on the geopolitical lingo. It includes information on Canada, the United States, Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, the Pacific and the Poles (North and South, not Walesa and Chopin). Feel free to e-mail us with comments, corrections or updates. CANADA Adjectives Do not inflect the names of provinces when used adjectivally. Huh? Put in plain English, that means it's okay to use Albertan as a noun, but not as an adjective. "The Alberta doctor saw many Albertans in her practice." This doesn't work for all provinces though. There is no real adjectival form for Saskatchewan or Ontario, although in a pinch you can get away with Saskatchewaners and Ontarians. People from PEI can just be called Islanders. Quebeckers can be called Quebecois. St. John's and Saint John

    Canadian Geography and Butterfly Distribution
Canada, with a land area of 9,922,335 square kilometres (almost 4 million square miles), is the second largest country in the world in area. It extends more than 5000 kilometres east to west from St. John's in Newfoundland to Victoria on Vancouver Island, and more than 4600 kilometres from the top of Ellesmere Island in the Arctic to Point Pelee in southern Ontario to the south. Most of this vast area, however, is sparsely populated, with the majority of Canada's 30 million inhabitants living in a narrow zone along Lake Ontario and in the St. Lawrence River Valley, an area that occupies less than 1 per cent of the land area. Politically, Canada was until recently divided into ten provinces that cross the southern half of Canada and two territories in the north. From east to west, the provinces are Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, and the two territories were Northwest Territories and Yukon. On April 1, 1999, the eastern half of the mainland of the Northwest Territory, and most of the Arctic Islands, was made into the new territory of Nunavut. Two life zones dominate Canada's landscape. The boreal forest, or Taiga Zone, that stretches from Newfoundland, the northern edge of the Great Plains, and the Rocky Mountain foothills northward to treeline, occupies fully 50 per cent of Canada's land mass or five million square kilometres; the Tundra Zone that stretches across northern Canada north of treeline, occupies another 25 per cent or 2.5 million square kilometres. These two life zones are the most sparsely populated parts of Canada, and have few roads to provide access for survey work on butterflies; the spotty distribution of butterflies on the maps for these areas reflects this paucity of available data.

GEOGRAPHY AND ECONOMY The following is an extract from the "Citizenship and Immigration Canada" edited by Anna Zibarras. Canada consists of ten provinces and two territories. The provinces are (from west to east): British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland/Labrador. The territories are the Yukon and the Northwest Territories (NWT). In 1999, the eastern part of the NWT will become a separate territory called Nunavut. Physically, Canada is very large and diverse. Learning about its main features will help you to understand some of Canada's unique strengths. You will also understand some of the difficulties of travel, communication and business.
    Distances
Distances in Canada are measured in kilometers. Canada is over 7,000 km from east to west (from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia). You would need seven days to drive from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Vancouver, British Columbia. By airplane, the same trip would take about seven hours.
    Where Canadians Live
Canada has more than 27 million people. More than 80 percent of all the people in Canada live in cities and towns within 250 km of the United States border.
