How do I qualify for a North Carolina license?
The standard basis for licensure is the completion of an approved education program at an accredited college or university. Most out-of-state applicants qualify through reciprocity plans that allow educators from outside North Carolina to establish eligibility for licensing in North Carolina.

    Certification
A hundred years ago a person could enter the teaching profession with a relatively small amount of preparation. This is no longer true.
Entering the teaching profession has required increasingly greater training over the years. Teaching today requires better preparation because of the knowledge explosion and because more is now known about how children learn.
Today, virtually every state or province requires that prospective teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate as well. To qualify for the certificate the student must complete a number of state-prescribed professional studies in education.
STATE OF MICHIGAN In the state of Michigan the student who meets these requirements receives the Provisional teaching certificate, either elementary or secondary, which is valid for six years. The elementary certificate qualifies him to teach kindergarten through the fifth grade and his major and /or minor in grades 6-8 (exceptions are available for smaller schools). The secondary certificate qualifies him to teach the seventh through the twelfth grades. During the six year period following graduation, the new teacher should complete three years of actual teaching and a minimum of eighteen semester hours of course work in a planned program of study in college or in graduate school to receive a PROFESSIONAL certificate.

Department of Educational Leadership The mission of the Department of Educational Leadership is to prepare educational leaders to serve with vision, integrity, and skill in elementary and secondary schools in the state, the region, and beyond. A secondary mission of the Department is to prepare educational leaders for other administrative positions in educational organizations and agencies, particularly in institutions of higher education. A tertiary mission of the Department is to prepare leaders for positions in non-educational settings such as medical and social service organizations. Master of Education The M.Ed. program in Educational Leadership is designed to prepare students for administrative positions in either elementary or secondary schools. Upon completion of the M.Ed. degree, a student will have completed the requirements for North Dakota principal certification at either the elementary or secondary level. Master of Science The M.S. program in Educational Leadership is designed for students whose goals are to obtain positions in education but not necessarily in public school administration. Students interested in research in educational administration, higher education administration, agency administration, or other education-related areas for which teacher certification is not required are encouraged to apply for the M.S. degree program. Upon completion of the M.S. degree, a student probably will not have completed the requirements for administrative certification in North Dakota.
