Geography
Situated in the geographical center of North America, North Dakota is subject to the extremes of a continental climate. Semiarid conditions prevail in the western half of the state, but in the east an average annual rainfall of 22 in. (55 cm), much of it falling in the crop-growing spring and summer months, enables the rich soil to yield abundantly. North Dakota is one of the most rural states in the nation; the cities and towns supply the needs of neighboring farms, and industry is largely devoted to the processing of agricultural products. To the west of the valley a series of escarpments rises some 300 ft (91 m) to meet the drift prairies, where rolling hills, scattered lakes, and occasional moraines form a pleasant and fertile countryside. The productivity of the soil makes North Dakota a leader in wheat (ranking second in the nation), barley, sugar beets, oats, soybeans, and sunflowers. In income earned, however, cattle and cattle products exceed all the crops except wheat. Bismarck , on the eastern bank of the Missouri River, is the capital and Fargo is the largest city.

North Dakota: Geography Situated in the geographical center of North America, North Dakota is subject to the extremes of a continental climate. The eastern half of the state is in the central lowlands, a belt of black earth covered in spring by the soft green of sprouting grain and later by the bronze of flowering wheat or the blue of flax. Along the banks of the Red River lies a wedge of land, c.40 mi (60 km) wide at the Canadian border and tapering to 10 mi (16 km) in the south, that is the floor of the former glacial Lake Agassiz. Treeless, except along the rivers, and without surface rocks, this flat land was transformed into the bonanza wheat fields of the 1870s and 80s, with farms ranging in size from 3,000 to 65,000 acres (1,200-26,000 hectares). Today the average farm in the Red River valley is about 450 acres (180 hectares); the state average is about 1,000 acres (400 hectares). Its major crop, wheat, is varied with such crops as flax and seed potatoes.

Next up is state competition in April
    By Paulette Tobin
    Herald Staff Writer

Lucas Anvarinia of Ben Franklin Elementary School correctly answered a question about a city crucial to the Confederacy to win his school's Geography Bee. For Valley Middle School's Joey Denman, it was knowing which Canadian province celebrates a Scots heritage. In all, six Grand Forks elementary schools and four middle schools had students in grades 4 to 8 competing to show who had the greatest knowledge of geography. School winners from across North Dakota were eligible to take a written test, and the students who finished in the top 100 based on that examination will be eligible to compete in the North Dakota Geography Bee on April 4 in Minot. Knowledge of places, maps and history is paramount to success in Geography Bee, said Anvarinia, a fifth-grader who won his school's competition last year, too. Many students also have to battle nerves when they have to go to the gym and answer questions in front of all their schoolmates, he said. "The first first couple of questions, most of the kids are nervous," he said. "Then once they get going, some of the kids go, 'Oh, this is easy.'"

    Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920
Perhaps in no other state has geography dictated the development of the state more than in North Dakota. North Dakota comprises an area of 70,665 square miles (size of the six New England states and New Jersey), and its geography is seen as four separate regions: the Red River Valley, the Drift Prairie, the Missouri Plateau, and the Badlands. The lowest point in North Dakota is 792 feet above sea level at Pembina in the extreme northeast corner, and the highest elevation is 3,506 feet above sea level at White Butte in the southwest portion of the state. North Dakota has been described as a rectangle approximately 335 miles from east to west and 210 miles from north to south. It is bordered by Minnesota on the east, Montana on the west, and South Dakota on the south. Its northern border forms part of the international boundary with Canada, bordering the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. North Dakota is considered to have a continental climate—cold winters and hot summers, low humidity, light rainfall, and much sunshine. Extremes in temperatures may also abound. The climate is the result of North Dakota's location in the geographic center of North America. There are few natural barriers on the northern Great Plains and the winds move freely across the plains and account for rapid changes in temperature.
