ONLINE WEATHER IN THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND EARTH SCIENCES AT NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY
Harris E. Williams, North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC 27707. The Online Weather Studies course is presented in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). The course is structured to an audience of mainly undergraduate students. NCCU, a Historically Black College/University (HBCU), is one of the 16 constitute institutions of the University of North Carolina system. The Kipling Report ranked NCCU as the top HBCU in the nation. Recently, NCCU was ranked as one of sixteen North Carolina Universities in the top one hundred institutions in the nation by the Kipling Report. NCCU is an expanding university with a culturally diverse student body of over six thousand and is projected by the University of North Carolina to have over ten thousand students within the next ten years. The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences was started in 1960 by Dr. Theodore R. Speigner. It has been a major producer of students trained in Geography and the Earth Sciences. The undergraduate degree program (BS) is in Geography while the graduate degree program (MS) is in the Earth Sciences. Although the graduate degree program is only about 6-years old, it has produced qualified students with the M.S. degrees in the Earth Sciences. The Online Weather Studies at NCCU is a 2000- level course, taught to students from all disciplines. Students majoring in Geography and Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Biology Criminal Justice, Psychology and other disciplines elect to enroll in the class to gain practical knowledge centering on atmospheric dynamics. Students not only gain valuable information but also satisfy general curiosities regarding weather. Test results indicate that comprehension levels exceed the average. The class is taught hands-on in an interactive learning format. The Online Weather classes have been limited by the availability of computers and because it is a new course. These numbers are expected to increase with student awareness. Without exception, all the students have given the course very good reviews.

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office and the University of North Carolina Press are pleased to announce publication in May, 2003, of A Guide to the Historic Architecture of Piedmont North Carolina by Catherine W. Bishir and Michael T. Southern. The book is the third and final volume of a remarkable historical portrait that celebrates generations of human experience as mirrored in the historic architecture of one of the nation's oldest and most complex states. Together, the books succinctly and lucidly present over 5,000 places, with 1,200 photographs, location maps of sites in 100 counties and 51 towns and cities, and original regional maps showing historic patterns of transportation, settlement, and development. The full range of the state's architectural heritage is represented, from the simplest early houses to skyscrapers of the late 20th century. Concise, readible, and well-illustrated introductions to each region give context to individual buildings and places. Thorough indexes provide quick references to major historical themes, key examples of building types and styles, and the known works of architects and builders.

The potential for synergy between environmental research and GIS is well demonstrated by several projects ongoing at UNC Chapel Hill. The strength of programs in biology, epidemiology, geography, and environmental sciences and engineering; and rapidly growing facilities and expertise in GIS within the Department of Geography and elsewhere on campus bodes well for the continued development of this particular research focus in GIS
Forest Ecology
As a joint effort of the Biology Department, the North Carolina Botanical Garden, and the Curriculum in Ecology, work is underway to consolidate and expand a comprehensive database for the southern Appalachian region, and to develop analytical tools and methods for regional vegetation and other environmental analyses. This database includes data from the National Biological Service's recently completed Southern Appalachian Assessment, data covering Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) from the National Park Service, vegetation data from 0.1 to 1 ha plots, and regional floristic data, including county level distributions for North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina, and a comprehensive set of computerized checklists for the region. The integration of these detailed datasets provides a unique opportunity to explore GIS applications in a topographically and biologically diverse region, a region currently undergoing change due to urban and recreational development (resulting in habitat loss and fragmentation), change in ecological processes (e.g., reduced fire frequency, alteration of hydrology), direct species removal (e.g., historic losses like gray wolf, mountain lion, woodland bison, and elk, as well as current harvest of medicinal plants, hunting, and fishing), air and water pollution, and exotic species invasions.
