  • National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. Each subject has its own page that contains findings from related assessments, answers to basic questions about assessment, and standards and frameworks links. The NAEP site contains the following results (and the year last administered): the arts (1997), civics (1998), geography (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), math (2000), reading (2000), science (1996;the 2000 results are due in the fall of 2001), US history (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), and writing (1998).

Albemarle Eden Lenoir Rtp ... Roxboro NORTH CAROLINA -Geography State in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). There begins the Piedmont, a rolling hill country with many swift streams such as the Broad River; the Catawba; and the Pee Dee, with its three large dams. The hydroelectric power these rivers generate has made this an important manufacturing area, and the Piedmont supports most of the state's population and has its largest cities. At the western edge of the Piedmont the land rises abruptly in the Blue Ridge, then dips down to several basins, and rises again in the Great Smoky Mts. Asheville is the leading urban center of this mountain region, which includes Mt. Mitchell (6,684 ft/2,037 m), the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The French Broad River, the Watauga, and other rivers rising W of the Blue Ridge flow into the Mississippi system, almost all via the Tennessee River. North Carolina, in the warm temperate zone, has a mild, generally uniform climate, with abundant and well distributed rainfall. The state's congenial climate, its many miles of beaches, and its beautiful mountains attract large numbers of visitors and vacationers each year. Chief among the tourist attractions are the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Cape Lookout National Seashore, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Great Smoky Mts. National Park. Wildlife abounds in the national forests (the state has four) and in the Dismal Swamp. Places of historic interest include Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, on Roanoke Island; the Wright Brothers National Memorial, at Kitty Hawk; Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, at Flatrock; and Guilford Courthouse and Moores Creek national military parks.

LAMP: LIVING AMERICAN MEMORY PROJECT
LAMP stands for the Living American Memory Project. Its basic idea is to use the fuel of web links to light up the past so that we better understand our present and future. However, there is much more to this story . When you've read this story, follow the links in the model LAMP project below or explore the Other Resources links at the bottom of this page. Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Robert Houghton, WCU

Trials and Terrain:
Their Impact on the Development of Western North Carolina
THE INFLUENCE OF GEOGRAPHY ON
WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA CULTURE COMMUNICATIONS DYES CLOTHING FOOD ... TRANSPORTATION We approached this project not only as a students doing a University assignment but as "born-and-raised mountaineers" (for several of us) who have experienced many of the old mountain ways through family and friends. Others of our team have chosen to live in this area for many of the reasons that brought the first settlers to this land. We value our experiences as ones to be shared and appreciated, to be passed on to others as a means of understanding history and participating in it. The geography of the land was and is a big influence on the lives of Western North Carolinians, but the brave souls who first arrived here experienced great challenges posed by this beautiful but sometimes harsh "promised land." Throughout human history the choice of habitable land has greatly influenced the development of culture. The settlement of Western North Carolina was no exception. Nowhere in American colonization is the influence of the mountainous terrain more well defined than in the comparisons of the life styles and cultures of the settlers of North Carolina. How did the geography of Western North Carolina affect the lives of early European settlers and how does it affect those in generations that follow? Follow the links to the sites above to experience the stories and pictures of lives past and present.
