North Carolina Character Education Partnership: General Information
In 1996, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction received a three year grant from the United States Office of Education to fund a partnership in character education. North Carolina joins 28 other states in receiving grants for this purpose from The Fund for the Improvement of Education. North Carolina was funded on the second attempt in the second year of the competition. States receiving funding are: The North Carolina Character Education Partnership (NCCEP) has developed a model to promote the development of character and citizenship. NCCEP is comprised of three county school systems (Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Cumberland, and Wake) working collaboratively with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and The Center for the Prevention of School Violence. The Partnership has developed and piloted a model character education program that can be replicated and adapted throughout the state and across the country. A Steering Committee, comprised of the project coordinator and one representative from each of the partners, coordinates the project to ensure that the activities are carried out as planned. The Steering Committee is staffed by a part-time Partnership Coordinator and meets quarterly to review progress, screen submissions to the Character Education Clearinghouse, exchange information, plan dissemination, and make the necessary modifications to the model. An outside evaluator has been employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs implemented by the Partnership.

general education (Effective Fall 1994). To accomplish these ends, all baccalaureateprograms at NC State include the following general education requirements.
http://www.ncsu.edu/provost/academic_programs/ger/
Undergraduate Program Information GENERAL EDUCATION
Effective Fall 1994
INTRODUCTION The program in General Education establishes the foundation for a lifetime of intellectual discovery, personal development, and community service while preparing students for advanced work in various professional disciplines and fields of knowledge. Courses meeting the General Education Requirements introduce students to the discipline of intellectual inquiry and promote respect for moral values and aesthetic experience. Students further develop an understanding of the human mind and spirit, a sense of history and the duties of citizenship, and the workings of society and the world around us. General Education in the basic fields of knowledge encourages mastery of fundamentals, versatility of mind, motivation for learning, intellectual discipline, and self-reliance. Development of these skills enables ethical and responsible participation in a democratic society and constitutes the best preparation for dealing creatively and constructively with the issues and opportunities of our time. A university education should prepare students for a full life in their professions and occupations by means of curricula that provide both practical foundations for future careers and such intangibles as intellectual flexibility, broad knowledge, and a basic comprehension of human achievements. To accomplish these ends, all baccalaureate programs at NC State include the following general education requirements.
