    Nigeria
    History
The earliest Nigerians were the Nok people, skilled artisans from around the Jos area. By the beginning of the second millennium the Nok had virtually disappeared and the state of Kanem, to the north east of Lake Chad, was flourishing. Much of Kanem was Islamic, as were the kingdoms around Kano and Katsina, and its wealth came from control of the trans-Saharan trade route from West Africa to the Mediterranean. These northern Islamic states remained untouched by Europeans until well into the 19th century. By contrast the southern states were dominated in the 14th and 15th centuries by a number of Yoruba empires with traditional Obas (kings) who cultivated European contact through the Portugese spice trade. At the end of the 18th century Fulani religious zealots in the north, sick of being dominated by the Islamic Hausa states, took over and created the single Islamic state of the Sokoto Caliphate. This original division between the Islamic government in the north and the Yoruba tribes in the south has never healed, and over the years intertribal fighting and civil wars have rubbed salt into the wounds. Even today Nigerian politics is riddled with tribal rivalries and ancient axes to grind. After the bottom fell out of the spice trade, the Portugese, and then the British, began trading in the human misery of slaves, but by 1807 slavery had been banned and the British began to look for other ways to turn a buck. British companies began to take control of the Jos mines thus destroying the livelihood of thousands of independent tin producers. Worse still, the heavy reliance on mining exports was achieved at the expense of Nigeria's export food crops and the country had its first-ever food shortage. The British had also appointed chiefs in the southern Ibo communities to run the area but this was like hammering square pegs into round holes. These 'invented chiefs' had little in common with the people and simmering hostility and resentment was the usual result.

The letter read: Dear Brother Benbow; I and a group of ministers began seeking the Lord in his fullness according to the Holy Bible. We began receiving much criticism and persecution from our religious constituents.
We started asking the Lord; "what shall we do?" While asleep one night, your name and location appeared to me in a dream. So we are following through; we are sending you a Macedonian Call, please come help us, and received us into your faith".

    Early History
Little is known of the earliest history of Nigeria. By c.2000 B.C. most of the country was sparsely inhabited by persons who had a rudimentary knowledge of raising domesticated food plants and of herding animals. From c.800 B.C. to c. A.D. 200 the neolithic Nok culture (named for the town where archaeological findings first were made) flourished on the Jos Plateau; the Nok people made fine terra-cotta sculptures and probably knew how to work tin and iron. The first important centralized state to influence Nigeria was Kanem-Bornu, which probably was founded in the 8th cent. A.D. , to the north of Lake Chad (outside modern Nigeria). In the 11th cent., by which time its rulers had been converted to Islam, Kanem-Bornu expanded south of Lake Chad into present-day Nigeria, and in the late 15th cent. its capital was moved there. Katsina In the late 15th cent. Portuguese navigators became the first Europeans to visit Nigeria. They soon began to purchase slaves and agricultural produce from coastal middlemen; the slaves had been captured further inland by the middlemen. The Portuguese were followed by British, French, and Dutch traders. Among the Igbo and Ibibio a number of city-states were established by individuals who had become wealthy by engaging in the slave trade; these included Bonny , Owome, and Okrika.

    HISTORY AND PEOPLE
    NIGERIA
Much has been said and written about Nigeria, her people and culture, economy and politics, that sheds light on the tremendous potential of this African Giant. However, little is known to the outside world about the many exciting tourist attractions available in Nigeria: Historic sites nestled amid rivers and rain forests, breathtaking mountain vistas, remote creek villages, miles of pristine beaches and exotic national wildlife reserves. There are also museums, festivals, music and dance, a rich cultural melange right down to everyday traditional markets. These are just some of the spectacular sights and sensual delights awaiting the traveler to Nigeria. Nigeria has the largest population of any country in Africa (about 120 million), and the greatest diversity of cultures, ways of life, cities and terrain. With a total land area of 923,768 sq. km. (356,668 sq. mi.) Nigeria is the 14th largest country in Africa. Its coastline, on the Gulf of Guinea, stretches 774 km (480 mi.). Nigeria shares its international border of 4,470 km (2513 mi.) with four neighbors: Chad, Cameroon, Benin, and Niger. Until 1989 the capital was Lagos, with a population of about 2,500,000, but the government recently moved the capital to Abuja. CLIMATE AND WEATHER Nigeria lies entirely within the tropics yet there are wide climactic variations. In general, there are two seasons, dry and wet, throughout Nigeria. Near the coast, the seasons are less sharply defined. Temperatures of over 900F are common in the north, but near the coast, where the humidity is higher, temperatures seldom climb above that mark. Inland, around the two great rivers, the wet season lasts from April-Oct. and the dry season from Nov.-March. Temperatures are highest from Feb-April in the south and MarchJune in the north; they're lowest in July and Aug. over most of the country.

    History and Government
    History:
Rather than accept his victory, the military annulled the elections and returned the country to military rule. Sani Abacha, a senior aide to the former president, Babangida, emerged as the new military strongman and, over the next five years, presided over an increasingly oppressive regime. Abiola was put under arrest and other opponents of the regime were jailed or exiled. The regime attracted much international criticism for its treatment of the Ogoni people, located in the oil-rich southeast of the country. A peaceful campaign of opposition, led by writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, was violently suppressed by the military. Prominent Ogoni leaders, including Saro-Wiwa himself, were executed on trumped-up charges. Thereafter, the Abacha government suffered increasing diplomatic isolation, much of it orchestrated by Nelson Mandela, then president of South Africa.
    Sharia
Government: Under the provisions of the constitution announced by the government in late 1998, executive power is vested in the president of the republic. Legislative responsibilities are entrusted to the bicameral national assembly, comprising the 360-member House of Representatives and the 109-member Senate. Members of both houses serve a four-year term.

    • Legal system based on English common law, Islamic law, and tribal law

    • Elections last held February - March 1999
    Background
The Federal Republic of Nigeria covers an area of 923,768 sq. km on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea. It has Benin on its Western side, Niger on the North, Chad to the north-east and Cameroon to the east and south-east. Its November 1991 census stood at 88,514,501 and has risen above 120 million currently. It is the most populated country in Africa. Its population is extremely diverse with well over 250 ethnic groups, some numbering fewer than 10,000 people. Ten ethnic groups including Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, Ibo, Kanuri, Tiv, Edo, Nupe, Ibibio and Ijaw account for nearly 80% of the total population. Most of its population is concentrated in the southern part of the country, as well as in the area of dense settlement around Kano in the north. Between the two areas is a sparsely populated middle belt.
    Pre-colonial History
Between the 11th century and European colonial conquest in the late 19th century, the area in and around Nigeria was home to a number of sophisticated and influential societies. Among the most important were the northeastern kingdom of Borno, the Hausa city-state/kingdoms of Katsina, Kano, Zaria, and Gobir in northern-central Nigeria, the Yoruba city-states/kingdoms of Ife, Oyo, and Ijebu in southwestern Nigeria, the southern kingdom of Benin, and the Igbo communities of eastern Nigeria. Extensive trading networks developed among these societies and northwards across the Sahara.

  • More than 15,000 "peacekeeping" troops from West Africa nations and millions of dollars of logistical support from the US and Europe have failed to stop a ragtag bunch of rebels from shooting their way into Sierra Leone's capital this week. The rebels are mostly teenagers, often high on drugs. This latest development in Sierra Leone's civil war has analysts wondering if regional armies can solve conflicts in Africa. Defending Sierra Leone's elected government is a regional force known as ECOMOG, led by Nigeria, the largest military power in West Africa. Thousands of Nigerian troops could not stop the advance after rebels released their comrades from a prison in Freetown on Wednesday. UN officials say that the rebels have taken control of more than half of the country, including a key diamond-mining town, in just two weeks. REGIONAL EFFORT: At emergency meeting Dec. 28 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, West African officials sought solution to Sierra Leone civil war.
