I am particularly dismayed that Times editors would print as a front page story an article more appropriate for the paper's editorial page. The crux of Ms. Zernike's article supporting alternative certification of teachers is the assertion that traditionally prepared secondary-school teachers (especially in mathematics) do not study the subject they will teach. That's nonsense. The majority of statesincluding New Yorkrequire future teachers to have an academic major or minor. In states where this is not the case it is common for institutions of higher education to impose such a requirement. This basic information is found in the 2000 NASDTEC Manual (National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education Certification); a useful reference for your newsroom. Citing unnamed "critics and officials," Ms. Zernike questions the quality of students admitted to teacher education programs. I direct your attention to a 1999 report by the Educational Testing Service ("The Academic Quality of Perspective Teachers").
