What you need to know about degree completion
    and certification
    Declaration of Candidacy
Is this your last semester? Then you need to file a Declaration of Candidacy for a Graduate Degree form. You should complete this form in the semester in which you expect to receive a graduate degree. Declaration is valid for one semester only. If you do not graduate, another Declaration should be submitted the following semester. Please familiarize yourself with the policies and deadlines for degree completion. In particular, you should be aware that grades for courses required for the degree cannot be changed after the degree is conferred; a grade of "Incomplete" must be completed before the degree is awarded. Also, you must be continuously registered each fall and spring semester until you are awarded your degree. You must register during summer if that is the semester you will complete your degree requirements. Declaration of Candidacy forms can be completed on-line here Top of page
    Comprehensive Examinations/Final Projects
You should check with your faculty adviser for details on requirements for degree completion. Different programs have different requirements and they may vary from year to year. Comprehensive examinations, oral examinations, position papers, and portfolios are typically completed during the last semester of your degree program (usually excluding summer).

Students completing an approved master's degree program in certification areas are recommended by the School of Education to the New York State Department of Education as having completed academic requirements for the appropriate provisional or permanent certificate. Passing scores on tests required by New York State and U.S. citizenship, or intention to become a citizen , are also required for the first New York State certificate. Because some of the tests cover liberal arts and subject matter materials, they may be taken before entering graduate study. In some cases, students are encouraged to take the tests as early as possible. New York participates with several other states in the Interstate Certification Compact. This association can be helpful to graduates seeking to obtain certification in other member states . Because academic, examination, and other requirements vary from state to
state, students should contact specific state education departments for certification information.

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor oversees academic advising and provides additional support in student decision-making and problem solving. The Undergraduate Academic Advisor works with the Undergraduate Recorder to help students with the administrative side of academic life. The Undergraduate Recorder maintains all student records and provides insight in academic rules and regulations.

Home Page Columbia in the Community Collaboration with Public Schools Lisa Mata, Columbia staff member reads every Friday with her P.S. 125 elementary student during Columbia Power Lunch. As an academic institution in New York City, various segments of the University have become involved with the New York City Public Schools. The following gives a sense of the breadth and depth of that involvement. Collaboration with area school districts: A number of new Columbia initiatives have been launched to enhance existing public school outreach and support. Many are forming as the University lays the groundwork for the new Columbia University School, a K-8 lab school that will contribute to the enhancement of area public schools. While the school is still in the planning stages (opening fall 2003 to 650 students), it is the University's hope that the relationships formed now will serve to link area public schools with Columbia-developed educational materials and academic expertise thereby enhancing teaching and learning in area public schools. To date a number of new initiatives have been established between Community School Districts (C.S.D.) 3, 5 and 2.
    • A collaboration between C.S.D. #3 and Impact II, a non-profit organization with a 15-year history of successful professional development in New York City is expected to lead to a substantial private donation to C.S.D. #3. This gift will be used to fund an extensive faculty development program in the area of using new media in the curriculum. The Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning and/or the Institute for Learning Technologies will play a major role in the faculty development program. Website:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first TESOL graduating class from the MIIS program. Shari Flynn, an ESOL teacher at Thomas S. Stone Elementary School, Mount Rainier, Maryland, in the United States, appeared on the U.S. television show Jeopardy, broadcast in June. She was a 1-day champion, winning $27,400 on her first appearance. On the second day, she was in the lead until she missed the Final Jeopardy question and won $1,000 more as the third-place contestant. She had the opportunity to speak about ESOL teaching when the host of the show, Alex Trebek, on revealing her profession, asked her "Given your experience, which people seem to have the most difficulty picking up English, which other countries?" She explained that in elementary school, the students' first language did not account for their ease or difficulty at learning languages as much as their families' literacy in their first language did.

    Who Is Power Pilates
Power Pilates has been operating since 1989. The company is made up of Founder/President Dr. Howard S. Sichel; Co-Owner/Vice President Susan Moran-Perich; and Co-Directors Bob Liekens, Phoebe Higgins and a group of senior level instructors. Combined, they have over 60 years experience in classical Pilates training and were certified in New York by Romana Kryzanowska in the early 1980s. Collectively our knowledge and experience makes our organization and educational programming stronger than any other in the marketplace today. We presently operate five studios in New York City, two in southern California and one in Chicago, which staff over 75 Pilates instructors.
We started our certification program in 1997, due to our need for quality instructors in our studios, and since that time we have certified over 750 instructors worldwide. Originally the program was based out of New York, but over the past several years we have been traveling to gyms, spas and hotels to instruct fitness professionals as well. We also have the most extensive Pilates continuing education program in the country.
We presently operate five Power Pilates studios in New York City, two in southern California and one in Chicago, which staff over 75 Pilates instructors. In addition to our studios, we have seven affiliate training centers nationwide.
