Select a borough to explore NEW YORK CITY is one of the great cultural capitals of the world. Hardly any other city in the world offers so much in the way of museums, theater, dance or music. And, although the city is one of the most densely populated urban areas in the world, it is also home to world-renowned parks, botanical gardens and zoos. Many of these institutions are ideal for family outings, and, in fact, more and more arts organizations are providing programs specially designed for families. Most major museums regularly offer workshops and tours for families. Many performing arts organizations, such as the New York Philhar-monic, New York City Ballet and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, have special family matinees designed to introduce parents and children to the world of music and dance. The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx recently opened a garden specifically designed for young people. Many of these institutions also offer free or discounted admission to children. For example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Brooklyn Museum all have free admission for children under 12, and the Museum of Modern Art is free to all under the age of 16 (when accompanied by an adult). Some institutions have pay-what-you-wish policies, and some are free to everyone on certain days or during specific hours. And of course some institutions, including the National Museum of the American Indian and the Socrates Sculpture Park, are free all the time. Free programs are indicated in bold type throughout this guide.

Working Mother Magazine Announces 100 Best Companies For Working Mothers
Findings Include: No Effects Of Recession On Work/Life Benefits And More Men Taking Paternity Leave
NEW YORK (September 24) Despite a business culture troubled by economic downturn, smart companies are carrying on their efforts to compete for the talent of the nation's 26 million working mothers, Working Mother magazine announced today.
With the release of the 17th annual list of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers," Working Mother laid out three basic trends among applicants: no rollback of work/life benefits during the recent recession, a post-9/11 increased emphasis on flexible scheduling, and augmented use of family leave by employees.
Editor-in-Chief Jill Kirschenbaum explained that, "We're also seeing more and more working dads demanding work/life benefits, which turns out to be good news for working moms. The more it becomes the norm for both parents to stay involved with their kids, the less women's family obligations will negatively affect their advancement or their paycheck."
Carol Evans, CEO of Working Mother Media, adds that, "Post-September 11, work/life initiatives have taken on even greater significance, with programs from employee assistance to telecommuting. Employees want to have flexibility to deal with family needs on a day-to-day basis, as well as in an emergency. Companies are winning the loyalty of employees who get the work done, wherever and whenever they do their jobs."

Micro Loans for the Very Poor
The New York Times
Sunday, February 16, 1997 Anyone who scoffs at the value of 62 cents should talk to Muhammad Yunus. In 1976, the Bangladeshi economics professor tried an experiment. From his pocket, he lent the equivalent of $26 to a group of 42 workers. With that 62 cents per person, they bought the materials for a dayís work weaving chairs or making pots. At the end of their first day as independent business owners, they sold their work and soon paid back loan. Thus began the microcredit movement, which has become the worldís hot idea for reducing poverty. This month, microcreditís backers met in Washington to began to broaden the programís reach and raise money from developed nations and institutions such as the World Bank. Eight million people are now getting microcredit, half of them in Bangladesh. Microcredit proponents want to expand that to 100 million people by 2005.It is a worthy goal that the united states should supports. The first microcredit program was the Grameen Bank, founded by Mr. yunus. Now almost all its borrowers are women, who tend to be poorer than men, have fewer opportunities and are much more likely to spend new earnings on their children, Grameen requires its borrowers to organize themselves into groups of five. All are cut off if one borrower defaults. They meet every week to make loan payments at commercial interest rates and critique one anotherís business plans. They also pledge to boil their water, keep their families small and carry out other good health practices. People who repay small and loans on time can take ones. Grameen, which now makes a profit, claims a higher repayment rate than traditional banks. One-third of its two million borrowers have crossed the poverty line and another third are close.
