In 1995 SHRP introduced the first Masters level program in New Jersey designed exclusively for Registered Dietitians (RDs) which provides a clinically challenging rigorous graduate education in nutrition. It is the only nutrition program in the state offering distance learning by the use of video-conferencing equipment (VTEL) and the Internet. This new and advanced technology allows interactive graduate courses to be offered simultaneously on the Newark and Stratford campuses, or from virtually anywhere.

Special Child Health Services Who Is A Special Child?
A special child is any infant, child or young adult, from birth to 21 years of age, with special health or developmental problems. Typical conditions may include:
  • An infant born with a birth defect or serious medical illness
  • A premature infant
  • A toddler having difficulty walking, playing and understanding
  • A child with a chronic illness
  • A teen who has been seriously injured in an accident
Any special child, regardless of the family's ability to pay (including those on supplemental security income), can get help from our Case Management Unit. We give special attention to children who need a number of services, over a long period of time. A case manager will ask for information about your child and your family, and will help you find the services you need. The Special Child Health Services Program is funded by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Special Child Health Services Program of the New Jersey State Department of Health in cooperation with Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey Foundation.

Dental Health Programs In addition to regular program activities, staff plays a leadership role in the Increase Physical Activity and Improve Nutrition Goal Team of the Partnership for Community Health. Participation in this community health improvement project reinforces dental health program activities because of the favorable impact nutrition can have on dental health. The goal of the Cavity Free Kids Program is to develop appropriate, effective and efficient interventions for children and their caregivers to prevent, alleviate and treat dental caries, periodontal diseases, dental pain and fear. The program brings together schools, day care providers, families and local health professionals to improve the oral health of pre-school children. The comprehensive program includes daily classroom-based tooth brushing using fluoride toothpaste, oral hygiene education, staff training, parent education, dental screening, referral and follow-up. Forty-nine sites (56 classrooms) were enrolled in the program during 1999, serving a total of 1,008 students. Six Cavity Free Kids training sessions were presented to a total of 90 participants who began the program during 1999. The Regional Dental Health Program worked with the New Jersey Dental Association to develop the Adopt A Pre-K Program as a companion to the Cavity Free Kids program. Adopt A Pre-K paired five dentists from the

    What Are the Regulations?
Both the United States and Canada are grappling with the best way to regulate herbal products. The overall goal is to provide access to consumers while maintaining safety and ensuring truthful labeling that is not misleading.
In Canada, regulations governing natural health remedies including herbal medicines have been delayed. The regulations, originally scheduled to become effective July 1, 1997 would have required establishments that manufacture or distribute drugs, including herbal remedies, to acquire annually an establishment license and pay establishment license fees. After an initial delay until January 1, 1998 for herbal remedies, traditional medicines, homeopathic preparations and vitamin and mineral supplements, the health minister called a halt to the regulations until a full and thorough public review could take place. While the review is underway, Health Canada continues to require that products meet standards of safety, efficacy, quality and cleanliness.
Critics of the law believe that DSHEA allows the sale of a broad range of dietary supplements without proof of safety, efficacy, or quality(10). They have also taken issue with DSHEA for allowing supplements to make health claims that foods containing the same nutrients cannot make(11). To remedy this situation, the Food and Drug Administration proposed rules in April 1998 that define certain permitted and prohibited types of labeling claims for dietary supplements.

    • Have you done anything in the past week to be healthy? Have you exercised lately? Did you think about the food you ate and how it affected you?
If you answered "no", you are taking your health for granted. If given the choice between healthy and unhealthy, most people would choose to be healthy. Then why is it there are so many unhealthy people? Most of us do not eat a well balanced, nutritious diet nor do we exercise regularly. For one reason or another, we do not always do what it takes to be healthy. If you are not living a healthy lifestyle, it's not too late to do something about it. OK, so you're not eating right or exercising, but you learn from your experiences and make changes today to be healthier.
