COLLECTION:
The New Jersey State Library is the primary depository for official publications of state government that are intended for public distribution. These include departmental annual reports, statistical reports, transcripts of legislative hearings, and special studies from the early part of the nineteenth century to the present. However, all strictly legal materials, e.g., Laws of New Jersey, court decisions, administrative regulations, have been removed and are in the Law Library . The unit also supplies many of these state publications on a regular basis to a network of libraries around the state and the country. Most of the collection is now in one spot and open for direct public access. "Dead" periodicals and some infrequently used materials are housed elsewhere in the building, and can be retrieved for you within a few minutes. The publications can be identified by author, title and subject in the online catalog. The State Library normally has three copies of each item. The first copy is a reference copy for use in the building only. The other copies are usually available for circulation. (For the newest items still in processing, only a non-circulating copy is available.) Do not rely on the statement of number of copies given with the call number in the catalog; it may show fewer than we really have because of problems encountered at the time the entire collection was barcoded.

New Jersey State GovernmentOverview
Each of the three branches of the state government the executive, the legislative and the judicial has powers granted to it by the New Jersey Constitution which allow each to impose checks and balances on the other two. Trenton has been New Jersey's capital since 1790. The State House and the State House Annex, located on West State Street, house the Legislature, the governor's office and some executive offices. Other government offices are nearby. Executive Branch
The New Jersey Constitution does not include the office of lieutenant governor, so a vacancy in the office of the governor results in succession by the president of the New Jersey Senate, with the Speaker of the General Assembly the next in line. Legislative Branch
The New Jersey Legislature consists of the Senate and the General Assembly . All legislative sessions, many committee hearings and most public hearings are held in the State House. The Senate and General Assembly chambers each have visitor galleries. There are 40 senators, one from each legislative district and 80 members of the Assembly (two from each legislative district). Senators' terms are four years except the term following the federal census which is two years. The full Senate is up for election at the same time. Assembly member terms are two years, all 80 seats being elected in November of odd-numbered years.

http://users.rowan.edu/~shontz/NJpathfinder/njpathfinder3.html
New Jersey A state is defined by the Merriam-Webster International Dictionary as "One of the bodies politic or component units in a federal system that is more or less independent and sovereign over internal affairs but forms with other units a sovereign nation." The state of New Jersey, established in 1787, is unique in its diversity. It has become well-known in its own right for prominence in areas ranging from great inventions to model progressive legislation. "The diversity of New Jersey is evident in its State Shield. The three plows in the shield honor the State's agricultural tradition. The helmet above the shield faces forward, an attitude denoting sovereignty and thus particularly fitting for one of the first governments created under the notion that the State itself was a sovereign. The supporting female figures, Liberty and Ceres, symbolize abundance. The State Motto, "Liberty and Prosperity", adopted in 1821, summarizes the direction in which New Jersey strives." An excerpt from The Encyclopedia of New Jersey, 2

How a Bill Becomes a Law in New Jersey
by: Andrew Have you ever wondered about how a bill becomes a law in New Jersey. If you don't know, let me explain it to you. First, a member of the State Senate or General Assemblywrites a bill. This bill may or may not become a law. Second, the State Senate and General Assembly vote for or against the bill. If the bill gets the majority of votes, it goes to the Governor. If the Governor signs the bill, it becomes a law. If he or she vetoes the bill, or turns it down, the bill goes back to the legislature. Sometimes they make changes to it. Finally, they vote again. If the bill gets 2/3 of the vote, it then becomes a law. I think that the people who made up this system were geniuses. What do you think about the process? Quick links Drew University Drew University Library Research Resources new jersey government Publications. new jersey government Publications.
http://www.depts.drew.edu/lib/njguide.html
Quick links: Drew University Drew University Library Research Resources > New Jersey Government Publications New Jersey Government Publications Drew University Library is a depository for publications of the State of New Jersey. State documents include annual reports of agencies, reports of special commissions, transcripts of public hearings before Legislative committees, magazines, brochures, statistical compilations, and sometimes full-length books. Most New Jersey documents are shelved in the New Jersey collection. A small percentage are shelved with the main collection. Drew Library uses a unique classification system for state documents based on the State Library classification scheme. Each number is prefixed by "NJ" to indicate that the document is shelved in the New Jersey collection. The first number following the "NJ" indicates the type of publication. 90: a report, hearing, or other monograph
901: an annual report
905: a periodical
Following the first number is a letter and 2 or 3 numbers. If the first number is 90, the letter and numbers represent the subject of the publication. If the number is 901 or 905, the letter and numbers represent the key word in the title. The last line of the call number is the date the document was published and any letters following the date serve to differentiate individual publications from others in the same year. For example, this is an explanation of the call number of the document entitled New Jersey State Rail Plan:
