The Government of Canada is participating in these projects through the National Literacy Secretariat , administered by Human Resources Development Canada The Honourable Andy Scott, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada. "The Government of Canada is dedicated to improving literacy across the country by facilitating access to various resources," said Mr. Scott.     OTTAWA, ONTARIO - The Honourable Pierre S. Pettigrew, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada, and the New Brunswick Minister of Education, the Honourable Bernard Richard, today signed a milestone agreement to harmonize student loans under the Canada Student Loans Program with student assistance provided by the Government of New Brunswick. The new agreement, called the Canada-New Brunswick Agreement on the Harmonization of Federal and Provincial Student Loans Programs, creates a single loan, and streamlines administration for loans in a manner that simplifies financial assistance for student borrowers. "This harmonization agreement represents one of the most significant changes to student loans in 35 years and is a significant advance in social union efforts," said Minister Pettigrew. "This is an example of the collaborative efforts between both levels of government to harmonize student loans, and it responds to requests by student groups and other stakeholders." "This agreement represents a positive step forward in simplifying the loans program for students," said Minister Richard. "It will improve quality and equity of service to students."

    GOVERNEMENT OF CANADA TO SUPPORT VICTIM INITIATIVES IN NEW BRUNSWICK OTTAWA, October 18, 2001 - Today, the Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and the Honourable Margaret-Ann Blaney, Minister of Public Safety of New Brunswick, announced that the Government of Canada will award $199,230 to three victim services initiatives in New Brunswick. The funding was provided through the Government of Canada's Policy Centre for Victim Issues and the Victim Fund, as part of a federal initiative to increase the confidence of victims of crime in the criminal justice system. The New Brunswick Department of Public Safety will also be contributing $50,000 towards one of these initiatives, the Valley Intervention Victims Project. "Our government is committed to partnering with provincial and local organizations to raise awareness of victims' needs and improve services to meet them," said Minister McLellan. "This funding will develop and enhance innovative provincial and community programs to meet the needs of victims of crime in New Brunswick." "I am pleased to be able to provide financial support to the Valley Family Resource Centre to provide localized victim services previously provided by our Fredericton office," said Minister Blaney. "This project will provide an integrated community and government response to victims of crime from the time police receive a call until the case is completed in court. The community will be an active partner in this initiative providing a range of services to victims in crisis."
