    INTRODUCTION
Background: Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Sint Maarten is shared with France (whose northern portion is named Saint Martin and is part of Guadeloupe).

    Geography
The Netherlands Antilles consist of two groups of islands in the Caribbean Sea. One group (the Leeward Islands) includes Curacao and Bonaire and lies about 50 km north of Venezuela; the other group of three islands (the Windward Islands), St Maarten, St Eustatius and Saba are 160 km east of Puerto Rico. Miami is 2.5 hours by air from Curacao, the largest and dominant island, which has the capital Willemstad. The land area is 960 sq km, with a coast line spanning 364km. The climate is tropical (12 degrees from the equator), but cooled by northeast trade winds. Average temperature is 27 C. Rain falls from October to February, mostly at night. The landscape is generally hilly with a volcanic interior. The highest point is 862m at Mount Scenery. Natural resources include phosphates and salt, but only 10% of the land is cultivable. Hurricanes can occur between July and October but rarely threaten Curacao and Bonaire which lie south of the Caribbean hurricane belt; only three have come near this century.

    Netherlands Antilles Geography
The Netherlands Antilles comprise five Caribbean Islands: Curaçao and Bonaire, situated 60-80 km off the Venezuelan coast, and, 880 km further north, Saba, Sint-Eustatius (Statia), and the southern part of Sint-Maarten (St. Martin), which are situated some 200 miles east and south-east of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and which English speakers generally refer to as the "Leeward Islands" (locals refer to them as the "Windwards"). Curaçao and Bonaire are the largest islands with a land area of 444 km² and 288 km² respectively. Saba, Sint-Eustatius and Sint-Maarten occupy an area of 13, 21 and 34 km² respectively. In general, the climate is characterized as mild tropical, fairly constant throughout the year. However, the semi-arid islands of Curaçao and Bonaire show significant differences compared with the lush, green islands of Sint-Maarten, Sint-Eustatius and Saba, which are located within the Atlantic hurricane belt.
