From " Model Railroading; Garden Railroading; Railroad Miniatures " Episode DWH-113
Whatever a railroader's preference, one of these four scales of model trains is sure to fit his or her needs.
When Allen Drucker tired of corporate life, he decided to open a store devoted to his passion: model railroading. Drucker says there are four types of model trains:
  • G gauge: the largest train available. This type is suitable for outdoor railroads, particularly garden railroading
  • O27: popular since the early 1900s. This type of train runs on three-rail tracks. Commonly made by Lionel, it was the most popular train in the 1930s, '40s and '50s.
  • HO: the most popular scale of model train for the past 30 years. Thousands of manufacturers market trains or parts at this size.
  • N: the smallest size. This type is now gaining popularity among hobbyists.
Hobbyists interested in model railroading can start out with some basic yet high-quality pieces. Drucker advises the following pieces for a beginning railroader:
  • Diesel locomotive
  • String of freight cars, including a boxcar, hopper, refrigerator car and caboose. All of these pieces should be fully assembled and painted.

    Welcome to
    Web Page
The Prairie Rail Workshop model railroad club has been around since 1981, and was originally organized as an informal group with a common interest in model railroading. We are located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, near the north edge of the Great Plains of North America. Our mandate has traditionally been to have fun and learn from each other. Our new mission statement is to build, maintain, and operate a portable model railroad layout, both for our enjoyment and for public display. We meet on the first and third Monday of every month between September and May in the basement of Saskatoon's Albert Community Centre. Meetings usually involve working on or operating our portable layout, although we have held the occasional clinic on a particular aspect of the hobby or just sat around and talked about trains. In recent years we have organized an annual layout tour in May, where some of the local modelers volunteer to show off their pikes. To take a virtual tour of some of the layouts in Saskatoon, click here One of our members has produced a catalogue of articles from a small variety of modeling magazines in his collection. The catalogue has been incorporated into a database that can be searched using a web browser. Click
