The Setting
The University
An able faculty, drawn from the best institutions in all parts of the nation, strive earnestly to perfect their teaching skills, while producing in their specialized studies scholarly books, articles, and conference papers that gain respect for themselves, the University, and the state. They thus ensure for their students instruction that is in immediate touch with current knowledge and thought. A body of energetic researchers, both faculty and other, assisted by an effective research administration, places Mississippi State among the first one hundred universities in the nation in federal research support. The University's service agencies are similarly distinguished, earning the respect and support of their varied constituencies throughout the state, as well as in other states and in foreign countries.
The History
By 1932, when the Legislature renamed the College as Mississippi State College, it consisted of the Agricultural Experiment Station (1887), the College of Engineering (1902), the College of Agriculture (1903), the School of Industrial Pedagogy (1909), the School of General Science (1911), the College of Business and Industry (1915), the Mississippi Agricultural Extension Service (1915), and the Division of Continuing Education, (1919). Further, in 1926 the College had received its first accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. By 1958, when the Legislature again renamed the College, as Mississippi State University, the Graduate School had been organized (1936), doctoral degree programs had begun (1951), the School of Forest Resources had been established (1954), and the College of Arts and Sciences had been created (1956).

http://www.umc.edu/generalinfo.html
HISTORY The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi. The Medical Center opened in 1955, but its beginnings date to 1903 when a two-year medical school was established on the parent campus in Oxford. In that era, certificate graduates went out of state to complete their doctor of medicine degrees. Finally, in 1950, the Mississippi Legislature by a one-vote margin enacted a law to create a four-year medical school. On July 1, 1955, the state's new University Medical Center, or UMC as it's commonly called, opened in Jackson, initially as a four-year medical school with medical and graduate students, interns and residents. As it had in Oxford, the School of Medicine offered both medical and graduate degree programs. The campus included a teaching hospital and a library. The Oxford campus' nursing department moved to the Medical Center in 1956 and it was granted school status in 1958. The School of Health Related Professions (SHRP) was added in 1971 and began offering baccalaureate curricula in 1973. The School of Dentistry was authorized in 1973, and its first students were admitted in 1975. The Medical Center functions as a separately funded, semi-autonomous unit responsible to the chancellor of the University of Mississippi and, through him, to the constitutional Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, which governs all eight state institutions of higher learning in Mississippi. The Medical Center's chief executive officer is the vice chancellor for health affairs.

Who Operates the Star Schools Program?
Hello, my name is Cheryl Garnette. As Team Leader for Technology Applications, I have the pleasure of coordinating the technology initiatives in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement including the Star Schools program, FIE Teacher Networking projects, Telecommunications Demonstration Project in Mathematics (PBS Mathline), and the Regional Technology Consortia. We have witnessed some really exciting, positive changes in schools and other learning environments as a result of these programs that challenge students to learn and help teachers use different kinds of technology in the classroom. When I am not sharing the good news about our technology initiatives, I find pleasure in my collection of Black memorabilia including dolls, art, stamps, books and other artifacts. My name is Kevin Arundel. I began my government career at the Office of Education as one of the developers of the ERIC system, after having been an elementary and high school history teacher and a research historian and information specialist at the Smithsonian's Science Information Exchange. I served for over 10 years as a Project Officer with the National Institute of Education's Education Satellite Program, monitoring projects in Appalachia, Alaska and the Rocky Mountains. These were the first distance education satellite projects in the United States to combine a mix of technologies (audio/video/computer, etc.) in the delivery of instruction and services to remote areas of the country. I am currently serving as a Project Officer for the Kentucky Telelinking Network (KTLN), the Iowa Star Schools Project (IDEA), three ERIC Clearinghouse, the ERIC Facility and two ERIC special projects, AskERIC and the National Parents Information Network (NPIN).

Blues harmonica player, R. L. House. Photo by Worth Long. What Is the Pine Hills Culture Program? The Pine Hills Culture Program, formed in 1996, is part of the University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage. Its purpose is to document, preserve, and present traditions and folk culture of the U.S. South's pine hills (or piney woods) region; to build and maintain a network of academics, public programmers, lay scholars, community leaders, and folk artists; and to serve as a regional archive, a place for exhibits, and an information clearinghouse. An important part of its mission is helping communities to identify their own traditions and integrate folklife into local projects, museums, schools, festivals, and other public presentations. The program is headed by a public sector folklorist, Dr. Carolyn Ware. Our main office is in the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage on the USM campus, but we also lease offices, including programming and exhibit space, at the Walthall Center in Hattiesburg's downtown historic district.
