USM ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CENTER GETS $2 MILLION GRANT
HATTIESBURG, Miss.
- The National Center for Economic Development at the University of Southern Mississippi will receive $2 million in federal funding, Sen. Trent Lott, R-Pascagoula, announced Thursday. "USM is playing a leading role in the training of economic development professionals, and this funding will enable the institution to enhance its economic development curriculum to produce even more trained economic developers who can help brings jobs to our state," Lott said. "Bringing new jobs to Mississippi is one of my top priorities." The grant will be administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and will help fund construction of a $10 million building to house the center, which received an initial $2 million federal grant in July. "Our Department of Economic Development has created innovative partnerships with communities and businesses throughout Mississippi and across our nation, which have resulted in new job opportunities, and business growth and expansion for both new and existing industry," said USM President Shelby Thames. "This $2 million funding is critical to our ability to maintain and expand state-of-the-art technology and facilities, which will help us ensure opportunities for further investment in job development and job growth.

The Interagency Staff Development System
What is the Mission of the Interagency Staff Development System? To: Design and build a coordinated, comprehensive statewide system for continuous improvement that will meet the training needs of all literacy and literacy-related personnel and will strengthen the delivery of services to the community.
What is The Interagency Staff Development System? I n the fall of 1993, a federal capacity-building grant was awarded to the Governor's Office of Literacy (GOL) to develop and demonstrate statewide interagency systems for staff development. By accepting these funds, the GOL also accepted the challenge of establishing a permanent vehicle through which literacy and literacy-related personnel could receive quality training at minimal cost. The Interagency Staff Development System is the GOL's response to that challenge. It is a system for making quality staff training in core values relevant and available to all front line staff of public and private service organizations. The System employs a Skills-Practice-Application model of training, which allows participants to try out and perfect their interpersonal and professional skills while on the job.

HELPING NASA PROMOTE GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGIES By Christopher Mapp HATTIESBURG "Just like the personal computer changed the way we do business and live everyday, it is projected that geospatial technologies will have more of an impact than the personal computer," said Heather Annulis, assistant professor from the Workplace Learning and Performance Center at the University of Southern Mississippi. So great is the interest in geospatial technology, which comprises one of the country's fastest growing high-tech sectors and offers enormous market potential, that NASA has funded the National Workforce Development Education and Training Initiative (NWDETI), a customer-driven effort to meet workforce demands for the emerging $21 billion geospatial industry. Over the past three years, USM's Workforce Training and Development (WTD) program has played a key role in NWDETI, which aims ultimately to develop a well-trained workforce for the geospatial industry that will help the United States maintain its global leadership in that field. The WTD program at USM, under the School of Engineering Technology, is currently in the third year of a five-year NWDETI grant from NASA worth $3 million. Geospatial technologies, which include global positioning systems, geographic information systems and remote sensing, are used by consumers in a variety of ways. OnStar, a satellite-assisted navigational system for automobiles, allows motorists to find their way to any destination using a computerized map. Community development agencies, foresters, farmers, law enforcement agencies and engineers, to name a few, rely on the technologies to address everyday challenges.

Workforce Development User requirement identification process. The creation of a workforce development thrust in the RSTC is the foundation for future demand and growth of remote sensing technology in Mississippi and the nation. Developing this workforce in Mississippi should include a "grass roots" foundation throughout the state, links to policy decision makers, and researchers. This area of the RSTC will carefully create a model of development to enhance our current and future workforce in Mississippi and the region. The SSRC will continue to conduct survey research to provide NASA and potential business partners information about the activity currently developing in the remote sensing field. These activities will be planned and conducted with close integration with each of the focus areas. Partnerships have been formed with researchers in the College of Business and Industry to meet the needs of the burgeoning remote sensing industry in Mississippi. The MSU-ES provides a link to all areas of Mississippi through the county offices and already has programs in agriculture and forestry. The face-to-face communication with end users that the Extension Service will provide through workshops and short courses will further the interest and use of remote sensing by individuals already in business or creating their business.
