GEOGRAPHY 275: GEOGRAPHY OF THE MIDDLE EAST Fall, 2002; JOE HOBBS, PROFESSOR Revised Syllabus This replaces the one in your course manual! The purpose of this course is to introduce you to many aspects of land and life in the Middle East. The course is divided into quarters. The first of these deals mostly with the environmental and cultural histories of the region. In the second quarter we will examine the roots of the faith and culture of Islam, and the nature of sacred space. The Arab-Israeli conflict will occupy most of the third quarter. We will pay special attention to the Palestinian-Israeli troubles. In the last quarter we will examine the reasons for American involvement in the Middle East including its Òwar on terrorÓ , and look at political and environmental problems related to growing human populations and diminishing water. When you finish this course you will be able to think and speak effectively about the Middle East, particularly about relationships between villagers, nomads and city folk; about the environmental history of the region; about management of environmental problems such as water shortages; about the civilization of Islam; about the culture and management of sacred places; about the reasons for war; and about the need for peace. We will cover many topics that you might think have nothing to do with geography. Geography, however, is much more than place names and major industries. Peoples' cultures, religions, world views and politics affect the landscape. It would be impossible to understand the region without considering these factors.

    Geography
Some Basic Information about the Geography Collection at the University of Chicago Library
The University of Chicago Library holds an excellent collection in most branches of human geography, as well as in urban studies and environmental studies. Areas of particular regional strength include North America, Europe, Russia and the former Soviet republics, and South Asia. Most of the collection is filed by call number in the stacks at the Joseph Regenstein Library. Certain reference materials and most unbound periodicals can be found in the Second Floor Reading Room ("RR2") of Regenstein. Some "scientific" materials are shelved in the John Crerar Library. Virtually all of the Library's holdings of books and serials are listed in its on-line catalog. Note that many monographic serials in geography are not "analyzed"; you must look them up by series name and number. Note also that some non-book titles, including most maps, are not cataloged at all. Most new materials in geography are "selected." Materials in general geography as well as geographical materials on North America, Western Europe, Latin America, Subsaharan Africa, and the Pacific are selected by the Bibliographer for Geography. Materials on the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Republics are selected by area-studies bibliographers. Material on the classical world and the ancient Near East is selected by the Classics Bibliographer.
