3 Since middle east archeology is very different from European archeology,it is natural to use the local word to name the place.

Using the Correct Reference Tool
tell >. We are all familiar with this word meaning an artificial hill, or a mound, from a previous settlement. Since the word has passed into the English language, the first librarian looked up the word in an unabridged English dictionary. The English dictionary correctly defined the word and gave the etymology as if the word came from Arabic. Using the correct tools let us examine this word's etymology. Arabic as a written language is much more recent than Hebrew. Old or Early Arabic has no surviving written records. The Talmud, which pre-dates written Arabic, has some statements containing names of objects in Arabic, making the Talmud one of the earliest sources of recorded Arabic. Classical Arabic dates from about 632 C.E. with the creation of an Arab empire. Arabic contained many dialects because the speakers were tribal and isolated from each other. However, speakers from different dialects could understand each other. Because of this isolation, Arabic had fewer outside influences than Hebrew and tended to have short vowels. Because of the synthetic nature of how Arabic developed in the classical period, most of the verbal and noun forms are created from three letter roots. Hebrew, too, has three-letter roots, but certain words have remnants or clues to earlier two-letter roots. For example some two-letter roots became words with a yod as the middle letter or via a doubling of one of the letters.

REMOTE SENSING FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST
As this photograph by James Sauer of the Roman fort of Qasr Bshir in Jordan illustrates, the antiquities of Jordan can be spectacularly well-preserved (see Kennedy and Riley 1990). The AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST was established in 1978 under the patronage of Crown Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan. Financial support has been provided by, amongst others, the British Academy, the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Australian Research Council. To date it consists of over 8000 photographs and several hundred maps for several countries, mainly Jordan. See also the link to the Aerial Archive for Jordan. Many other sites can be far less well-preserved. This small Byzantine town at Khirbet Khau in northern Jordan was difficult to interpret at ground level when visited by travellers a century ago and has been "lost" within the perimeter of a military base for the last half century. The air photograph, however, makes it far more readily and immediately intelligible, depicting the fort in the top right and the town which grew up around it on the west and south. The REMOTE SENSING FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST project is an outgrowth of the former, funded since 1991 by the Australian Research Council.

    Jerusalem's archeology under pressure

Jerusalem is a city steeped in history
By Jerusalem Correspendent, Hilary Andersson Jerusalem, heart of the ancient world and the focal point of three of the world's major religions, is home to some of the most precious archaeological sites in the world, but like almost everything else in the Holy Land, archaeology is tainted by politics. Hilary Andersson: " Relics of history are falling victim to the wranglings of the modern Israeli state" Over recent years crucial archaeological sites, mostly Christian, have been destroyed, buried or abandoned because of pressures from developers, politicians and orthodox Jews. Under a bus stop in the centre of Jerusalem lie the ruins of a Byzantine Church said to have once been the largest in the Middle East. Across the highway under the paving lie the precious ruins of an ancient Armenian burial crypt. Politicians say the road had to be built there. The carpark built above a seventh century Christian tomb In the windy streets of Jerusalem's old city the entrance to the remains of one the biggest Christian churches in the world, the Nea, has been locked and inaccessible to the public for over a year, because vandals had entered it. Nearby a seventh century Christian tomb, believed by anthropologists to be the one of the most important tombs ever discovered lies underneath a car park.
