THE METRIC SYSTEM SUCKS!
We are of the firm belief that the metric system sucks. It is a global conspiracy created to cause the downfall of all things that we know and love. Upon careful examination it is clear that the metric system is at least indirectly responsible for most of the world's problems, including but not limited to:
  • Government conspiracy
  • Microsoft Windows
  • Rap Music
  • Hondas and their drivers
  • Transistors
  • Pokemon
  • Jerry Springer
  • Televangelism

  • Starbucks coffee
  • Communism
  • Soccer
  • The Euro
THE ENGLISH SYSTEM KICKS ASS
Typical English Imperial System user(s) This site's purpose is to explore all of these issues in detail. Our goal is to make clear the many advantages of the English Standard system, which is clearly responsible for the finer things in life, including but not limited to:
  • Linux
  • The GNU project
  • Wrenches that fit perfectly
  • American cars

SI - The Metrics International System of Units
Travel in Washington Links: Washington State Traffic and Travel Information Washington State Tourism Information Washington State Ferries The International System of Units (SI) is a modernized version of the metric system established by international agreement. The metric system of measurement was developed during the French Revolution and was first promoted in the U.S. by Thomas Jefferson. Its use was legalized in the U.S. in 1866. In 1902, proposed congressional legislation requiring the U.S. Government to use the metric system exclusively was defeated by a single vote. SI provides a logical and interconnected framework for all measurements in science, industry, and commerce. The metric system is much simpler to use than the existing English system since all its units of measurement are divisible by 10.

U.S. Metric Association (USMA), Inc.
The U.S. Metric Association (USMA), Inc., with headquarters in Northridge CA, is a national non-profit organization, founded in 1916. It advocates U.S. conversion to the International System of Units which is known by the abbreviation SI (ess-eye). SI is also called the modern metric system . The process of changing measurement units to the metric system (i.e. SI) is called metric transition or metrication This site contains information on the SI metric system and information on the status of metric transition (metrication) in the United States. Information is also available on USMA's accomplishments, activities, and resources, as well as links to non-commercial websites with additional metric system information. Conversions between unit systems are a poor way to learn the metric system, and conversion factors can make the metric system look complicated. Therefore we do not support or directly link to any unit conversion utilities. However, conversion utilities are available through some of the non-USMA metric sites in the links section near the bottom of this page. The Report on the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) Forum held in November 2002 is now available.

A chronology of the SI metric system
Important dates in the history of the modern metric system:
In his book "The Tenth" Simon Stevin suggests that a decimal system should be used for weights and measures, coinage, and divisions of the degree of arc.
Authorities give credit for originating the metric system to Gabriel Mouton, a French vicar, on about this date.
Thomas Jefferson proposed a decimal-based measurement system for the United States.
France's Louis XVI authorized scientific investigations aimed at a reform of French weights and measures. These investigations led to the development of the first "metric" system.
The U.S. Mint was formed to produce the world's first decimal currency (the U.S. dollar consisting of 100 cents).
France officially adopted the metric system.
Napoleon temporarily suspended the compulsory provisions of the 1795 metric system adoption.
The metric system reinstated as the compulsory system in France.
The use of the metric system made legal (but not mandatory) in the United States by the (Kasson) Metric Act of 1866 (Public Law 39-183) [See: Page 1 and Page 2 ]. This law also made it unlawful to refuse to trade or deal in metric quantities.

Please note: For best printing results, set your Page Setup's Orientation to Landscape before printing. The following list provides the conversion relationship between U.S. customary units and SI (International System ) units. The proper conversion procedure is to multiply the specified value on the left (primarily U.S. customary values) by the conversion factor exactly as given below and then round to the appropriate number of significant digits desired. For example, to convert 11.4 ft to meters: 11.4 X 0.3048 = 3.47472, which rounds to 3.47 meters. Do not round either value before performing the multiplication, as accuracy would be reduced. A complete guide to the SI system and its use can be found in ASTM E 380, Metric Practice.

METRIC EQUIVALENTS TO OUR RECIPE MEASUREMENTS
Or, "If God had meant Humans to use the metric system,
he'd have given us ten fingers!!" (Um ...)
I get lots of letters from lots of Europeans and Asians and Australians that are very much like this one from Gumbo Pages reader and correspondent Dave Walker of England: "I use your recipe for jambalaya, and it's become essential eating at family camping trips and barbys. Thanks! Now i'm going to try the gumbo. Could you just clear one thing up? Being an Englishman, I'm not familiar with the measurement `quart'. Exactly how many pints are in a quart?" Ironic, isn't it? I think the system of measurement that I grew up with and that is still used almost exclusively in the United States is still called "The English System". Two pints in a quart, two cups in a pint, eight fluid ounces in a cup. Etc., etc., etc. This and many other similar enquiries keeps pounding into my head that my site is on the World Wide Web, and we silly Americans are practically the only people left who still measure this way. I decided that I really needed to put up a metric equivalents page. Some of these recipes (particularly the ones that come from my more elderly relatives) have measurements like "one stick of butter". Then, a guy from Finland writes and quite legitimately asks how much butter a stick is. (If only my great-aunt Nettie knew that guys in Finland were making her dirty rice recipe!)

19. Units Of Measurement And Conversion Factors
English / metric Units of measurement and conversion Factors. Clearlyunderstanding the units of measurement is very important, but
http://www.racquetresearch.com/units.htm
English / Metric Units of Measurement and Conversion Factors Clearly understanding the units of measurement is very important, but seldom given enough attention because the beginning student is usually hurried along through other topics. Mass is the quantity of matter in the thing you are studying. The metric unit of measurement of mass is the kilogram (kg), which is 1000 grams. The English unit is the slug, which is rarely used. The mass center of an object is where the balance point is. Weight is a force, which arises when a mass is acted on by gravity. The metric unit of weight should technically be the Newton (N), which is the unit of force, but commonly it is the kilogram of mass that is used to measure weight in the metric system because gravity is about the same everywhere on the Earth. The English unit of weight is the pound (lb). Length in the metric system is measured by meters (m), and in the English system by feet (ft). A mile is 5280 feet or 1609 meters (1.6 kilometers). Velocity is how fast something is moving in a certain direction. Remember, direction is key. You can have negative velocity if you are moving in the wrong direction. In the metric system, the unit for velocity is meters per second (m/s). In the English system, it miles per hour (mph).
