    Summary

    We identify three traits that are transmitted in humans in a Mendelian fashion: Aggression (A), Perfectionism (P) and Narcissism (N). We believe that the genetic loci corresponding to these traits will soon be identified. Thus, DNA analyses in the near future will allow one to trace personality traits and even personality types in ancestral hominid lineages. In addition, we show that the traits A, P and N can be identified in non-human primates. The evolutionary implications of this theory are evident. NPA Theory of Discrete Character Traits Our interpretation of the three traits in humans is as follows: Aggression (A) Narcissism (N) Perfectionism (P) The trait of perfectionism is not a basic drive of ambition and is not associated with a rage reaction. Rather it is a mediator of the unbridled drives of aggression and/or narcissism. The stereotypic acts associated with the trait of perfectionism are obsessiveness, compulsiveness, repetition, and the maintenance of neatness, order and symmetry. It is concluded that certain autistic and schizophrenic individuals are those in whom the two components of ambition, i.e., aggression and narcissism, have been suppressed by genetic or environmental factors, either congenitally, in childhood, or after maturity, thus revealing in the individual a primitive state of perfectionism.

    It is spring in Brno, so Brother Gregory and Brother Joseph want you to help them plant their pea seeds and carry out more investigations into Plant Hybridization At the start of each investigation they will ask you a question or questions. To find the answers, you must take two of their pea plants and carry out a series of carefully controlled experiments. In these experiments the plants you choose become the parents of a set of offspring. From the pattern of inheritance seen in these offspring pea plants, you will be able to find the answers you need. At the start of a genetic cross , the female egg cells of one plant are fertilized with the male pollen from the other plant. Tiny embryos develop, which are nourished with starchy food reserves, these are the seeds (or peas) that will grow into the next generation of pea plants. You must collect the seeds produced from these genetic crosses, plant them in the ground, wait until they grow and then count the number and type of offspring that you find in the monastery garden. From the results you obtain Brother Gregory needs to know what you think about his latest theory of inheritance.

    Gregor Johann Mendel was born on July 22, 1822 to peasant parents in a small agrarian town in Czechoslovakia. During his childhood he worked as a gardener, and as a young man attended the Olmutz Philosophical Institute. In 1843 he entered aAugustinian monastery in Brunn, Czechoslovakia. He was later sent to the University of Vienna to study. By both his professors at University and his colleagues at the monastery, Mendel was inspired to study variance in plants. He commenced his study in his monastery's experimental garden. Between 1856 and 1863 Mendel cultivated and tested some 28,000 pea plants. His experiments brought forth two generalizations which later became known as Mendel's Laws of Heredity. Ironically, when Mendel's paper was published on 1866, it had little impact. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the enormity of hisideas was realized.

    " The alleles of a gene exist in pairs but when gametes are formed, the members of each pair pass into different gametes. Thus each gamete contains only one allele of each gene. "
    Incomplete Dominance
    When a particular gene possesses both dominant and recessive alleles, it is possible for incomplete dominance to occur, where the organism at hand expresses a phenotype morphed by the expression of both the dominant and recessive alleles.
    In essence, heterozygous (possessing opposing alleles Rr) organisms derived from homozygous (possessing the same alleles RR or rr) are created, they possess a phenotype different to that of both their parents.
    Some of the following examples of monohybrid and dihybrid crossing illustrate this incomplete dominance.
    Multiple Alleles
    Diploid organisms naturally have a maximum of 2 alleles for each gene expressing a particular characteristic, one deriving from each parent. In some cases, however, more than two types of allele can code for a particular characteristic, as is the case of genetic coding for blood type in humans. Their are up to 6 possible genotypes that code for the four blood groups, A, B, AB and O.
