William McKinley At the 1896 Republican Convention, in time of depression, the wealthy Cleveland businessman Marcus Alonzo Hanna ensured the nomination of his friend William McKinley as "the advance agent of prosperity." The Democrats, advocating the "free and unlimited coinage of both silver and gold"which would have mildly inflated the currencynominated William Jennings Bryan. While Hanna used large contributions from eastern Republicans frightened by Bryan's views on silver, McKinley met delegations on his front porch in Canton, Ohio. He won by the largest majority of popular votes since 1872. Born in Niles, Ohio, in 1843, McKinley briefly attended Allegheny College, and was teaching in a country school when the Civil War broke out. Enlisting as a private in the Union Army, he was mustered out at the end of the war as a brevet major of volunteers. He studied law, opened an office in Canton, Ohio, and married Ida Saxton, daughter of a local banker.

Served 1897-1901, 1901 (assassinated in office) William F. McKinley was born January 29, 1843, at the family home in Niles, Ohio. McKinley got his start in politics from Rutherford Hayes, who was his commander during the Civil War. McKinley was only 19 when he joined the Union Army, and he and Hayes became and remained friends for many years. For 14 years, McKinley was a Congressman, then twice Governor of Ohio. He and his advisers invented the campaign button. He married Ida Saxton on Janunary 25, 1871, and they had two children, but both died young. Ida was sick much of her life, and McKinley took care of her. Elected in 1896, McKinley took office after almost 50 years when America had no international conflict. In 1898, the U.S. Battleship Maine was blown up in Havana, Cuba. While McKinley tried to keep the peace, he could not do so, and the U.S. declared war on Spain. Spain lost the war, and as a result, pulled out of Cuba and gave Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the U.S. Like Hayes, McKinley was a Republican. His first Vice President was Garrett Hobart and his second was Theodore Roosevelt, a hero of the Spanish-American War.

McKinley explains his reasons for retaining the Philippines
GENERAL: William McKinley (1843-1901) was the 25th president of the United States. During his administration, the two important issues of tariff and currency were overshadowed by the Spanish-American War of 1898. Under his administration, the United States gained its first overseas possessions, presenting the country with new problems of world power and territorial expansion. BIOGRAPHY: William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, on January 29, 1843, the seventh child of William and Nancy McKinley. William briefly attended Allegheny College, and was teaching in a country school when the Civil War broke out. Following the war, he studied law, began practicing in Canton Ohio, and married Ida Saxton. At age 34, McKinley won a seat in Congress. He was appointed to the Ways and Means Committee. Those who served with him attest that in his votes, he often sided with the public and avoided private interests. During his 14-year tenure with the House, McKinley became a leading expert on tariffs. He later became governor of Ohio, serving two terms. As a congressman, governor and later, president, McKinley, a man of moderation and compromise, held firmly to two beliefs: favorable tariff to stimulate American business and limited coinage of silver.

William McKinley, (1843-1901), m[sch ]-kin'le, 25th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . The strengthening and expansion of presidential power so characteristic of the 20th century began during his term. The swift and decisive U.S. victory in the Spanish-American War demonstrated this power, as did the manner in which McKinley secured ratification of the Treaty of Paris, pacified the Philippines, and initiated civil governments in the dependencies taken from Spain. Throughout his career, McKinley relied on calm appeals to reason and common sense, and he developed the arts of political management to a high pitch. McKinley realized that American politics was nonideological and offered no permanent solutions to problems. He always retained options suited to unforeseen events. His ability to sympathize with other men's views and to avoid grudges made many friends and few enemies. Complementing these professional skills were McKinley's impressive physical presence and a legendary courtesy. At the time of McKinley's death by assassination in 1901, the
