Through the years, and probably through the centuries, teachers have struggled to make math meaningful by providing students with problems and examples demonstrating its applications in everyday life. As this classic joke shows, some strategies are more successful and more meaningful than others! Teaching Math in 1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

One of the challenges facing mathematics teachers is convincing their students that there is a place for mathematics in the real world. The goal of this page is to collect examples of those applications. We encourage the submission of additional examples The (un)Truth About Statistics - a discussion of the statistics used in the media and how the formation of the questions can affect the survey results. 1993 Tampa Bay Oil Spill The PORTS-based hazardous spill trajectory modeling concept was (unfortunately) tested on August 10, 1993, when a collision occurred between two inbound fuel barges and an outbound phosphate freighter. Using a simple vector analysis routine and the PORTS wind and current data, a trajectory for the spill was calculated using wind direction as a cardinal direction, wind speed in knots, current direction in degrees true, and current speed in meters per second. At each hour, speed and direction for the oil movement were computed based on these data using a generic Minerals Management Service algorithm. The Career Development System, "Infusing Science and Math Instruction with Real world Activities" project will focus on infusing application and hands-on activities which correlate to real life situations and the workplace. These activities will be incorporated into several existing high school courses at nine sites. Using Tech Prep grants from both federal and state sources, CDS began in the fall of 1992 to investigate instructional approaches that allow teachers to teach the content area of their courses using more application and activities which show relevance to the "real world". Our four phase approach has been a vehicle for teachers to try new approaches and materials in their courses in a non-threatening fashion. This method also allows teachers to document the changes in student achievement, discipline problems, and attendance, as compared to a control group.
The project consists of four phases:
Phase 1: Orientation This phase provides teachers with a general orientation to the concept of including work-related or real-world activities to their instructional methodology as well as an overview to available resources and materials that can be of assistance.

The Chicago Academy of Sciences is proposing the Integrated Mathematics, Science, and Technology (IMSAT) pilot project: a three year research, development, and testing project to create an-integrated math, science, and technology experience-based activities program for PreK through 8th grade. The IMSAT pilot project will develop a series of math curricula that incorporate best practice methods including: integrated curricula, "real world" activities, constructivist pedagogies, cooperative learning, and performance assessment. As a result of the Academy's very successful Science on the Go! program, principals and teachers have requested a similar program for math. This project would use the existing PreK - 8th grade science program's experience-based activities and build a parallel set of math activities. The real observation, measurement, problem-solving, etc. nature of science activities provides the perfect base for math understanding and application. In addition, the activities would utilize the Internet for "real-world" research and data sites. All IMSAT activities would be derived from the State's new standards, as are all of the existing science activities. The mission of this project is to improve access to and the quality of math, science, and technology education for all students.

WYCINANKI: A MATH/ART LESSON IN SYMMETRY
GRADES: 3-6
Wycinanki, Polish paper cut designs, are symmetrical.
MATERIALS:
  • construction paper 12x18
  • scissors
  • glue
  • pencils
  • authentic examples or reproductions of Wycinanki
METHOD:
  • Share with the students the following historical reference: Farming families in Poland in the early 19th century used brightly colored Wycinanki to decorate their homes before Easter. They show that intricate details can be created using basic materials. Wycinanki are cut with sheep shears with no preliminary sketching. Cut from folded paper, they are always symmetrical. Their subject matter reflects the Polish countryside and includes trees, flowers, roosters, birds, and sometimes men and women. There are many styles of Wycinanki found in the different regions of Poland.
  • Activity: After students have looked at examples and discussed the characteristics of Wycinanki, they will create their own paper cut designs. Each student will use a sheet of 12x18 paper. It should be folded in half lengthwise, and students will draw their designs first with pencil. They will then carefully cut out their designs. Completed pictures should be mounted on black paper (12x18).
