AFORD Withdraws from Coalition
At the end of June the Alliance for Democracy withdrew from the coalition government, claiming that the UDF of President Muluzi was putting undue pressure on AFORD MPs to cross the floor of the house and join the UDF. They also withdrew from parliament in protest. This brought to an end the anomalous situation which had existed since the resignation some weeks earlier of AFORD leader Chakufwa Chihana as second vice-president. In the intervening period, he had been, effectively, in opposition, but his party in coalition. (return to Contents)
Muluzi Appeals for Unity
At celebrations marking the thirtieth anniversary of Malawi's status as a republic, held on Sunday 7 July, President Muluzi appealed for unity in the country, at a rally at the former Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. "I plead from the bottom of my heart, let us not allow political differences to divide us. Nationhood depends on each of us accepting that we are Malawians. Brothers and sisters, we must help each other as members of one family."

Culture
The African peoples in Malawi are all of Bantu origin. The main ethnic groups ('tribes') are the Chewa, dominant in the central and southern parts of the country; the Yao, also found in the south; and the Tumbuka in the north. There are very small populations of Asian and European people living mainly in the cities. The different ethnic groups in Malawi each have their own language or dialect. The Chewa are the dominant group and their language, called Chewa or Chichewa, is the common national tongue widely used throughout the country. English is the official language and is very widely spoken, particularly in main towns, but sometimes also in remote rural areas. Of the other languages spoken in Malawi, Tumbuka is spoken by about 500,000 people in the north, and Yao is spoken by about 600,000 people in the south. Most people in Malawi are Christian, usually members of one of the Protestant churches founded by missionaries in the late 19th century. There are Muslims in the north, especially along Lake Malawi - a legacy of the Arab slave traders who operated in this area. Alongside the established religions, many Malawians also hold traditional animist beliefs. Malawian artists who have achieved recognition for their work inside the country and abroad include Cuthy Mede (probably the best known), Kay Chirombo, Willie Nampeya and Louis Dimpwa. They work in various media, producing carvings in stone and wood, batiks and paintings.

South African writer Laurens van der Post's novel Venture to the Interior has good descriptions of the workings of the British colonial administration. Malawi Time and Date Malawi Culture Back to Top Though under the impact of modernization, Malawi's traditional culture is characterized by continuity as well as change, and the traditional life of the village has remained largely intact. One of the most distinctive features of Malawi culture is the enormous variety of traditional songs and dances that use the drum as the major musical instrument. Among the most notable of these dances are ingoma and gule wa mkulu for men and chimtali and visekese for women. There are various traditional arts and crafts, including sculpture in wood and ivory. There are two museums—the Museum of Malawi in Blantyre and a smaller one in Mangochi. While various cultural activities are organized by the Ministry of Youth and Culture, the University of Malawi Travelling Theatre, and other groups in Blantyre, the radio from Zomba and Lilongwe has proved to be the most effective means of bringing traditional and modern plays to the rural population.

Malawi is a landlocked country in East Africa — not on the coast of West Africa as stated. One of the reasons I am writing this letter is because another student from Innerleithen (Sarah) is travelling to Malawi in June to work in Ekwendeni Hospital. In the early 1990s I spent three years in Ekwendeni Hospital. This is a well- respected Malawi hospital and recognised as an excellent training school for nurses. The incident described in last week’s report regarding needles on the floor, etc., is something I did not ever encounter while working there. It is certainly not normal practice in this hospital. Both the matron and the assistant matron are two of the best and most-competent nurses I have ever worked with. The article also mentions patients lying on the floor. There are two reasons why this is so:

Malawi is often called the "warm heart of Africa" because of the warmth and friendliness of the people. Malawians typically live with their extended families in huts that are grouped together in villages. A spirit of cooperation prevails as family members share both work and resources. Resources

Finding a Window of Opportunity
By Yamiko Samu
I was born at midday on the fifth day of the ninth month, 24 years ago in Zomba Malawi's former capital city into a Christian family. It is important for me to say that because belief in, and fear of, evil spirits is an integral part of Malawi culture. Like my parents, many Malawians find themselves constantly torn between the fear of witchcraft, their belief in Christ, and concern for their families' welfare.
Growing up in Malawi means a daily confrontation with poverty. It can cause you to become either immune to it, or transformed by it into a hungry being lusting for success.
Success had always been my goal and I was prepared to go to extreme lengths to attain it. However, while I was at university I came to realize that it was not only my success that mattered, but the success of others, too. Yet how could I, a teen-ager at the time, seek success and prosperity on behalf of my nation and the whole of humanity? What could I do?
I felt small and insignificant. Somewhere in my thoughts however, as a bright light illuminates a dark night for the briefest of moments, came the truth that I was significant that without my "piece," the jigsaw puzzle would be incomplete.
During my junior year at college, a group of fellow Christian students from the university's Baptist Union of Students raised the necessary funds and built a Habitat house alongside a family in need during the school's Easter break. I went along for the fun of it, was my thinking. But God revealed to me a different thought: At last I had made a difference. I had sought success and prosperity for humanity and found it could be done, a small step at a time.

About Us Projects
Projects
As leaders develop new projects and identify successful existing ones, GAIA works to secure funding for these, through partnering them with US congregations and religious groups, through small grants, and through assisting them with applications to other funding sources when appropriate. Below is a sampling of the kind of projects with which we work.
Youth HIV Prevention Education
More than half of Malawi’s population is under 15. Helping uninfected youth stay uninfected is critical to stemming the epidemic and to Malawi’s economic development and social progress. Moreover, teaching youth compassion for those who are infected reduces the stigma associated with HIV.

MALAWI CULTURE
For the most part Malawians are very quiet and reserved people. They are extremely courteous to expatriates and very respectful of their elders. They are very appreciative of missionary work, and friendly towards Americans Malawians are usually quite tolerant of foreigners, but there are a few cultural "DO's and DON'Ts" that visitors should be aware of: It is considered risque to kiss or hug in public even if it is your spouse. This kind of showing affection is only done in private. Malawians do not hug when greeting each other. It is a nice gesture of respect to bow slightly and/or to hold the elbow of your right arm with your left hand when shaking the hand of someone who is older than you or who holds an important position. Do not put your hand in your pocket when talking to, or when greeting someone. This is a sign of disrespect. Take your hat off when talking to an important person or an elder person Do not say, "excuse me," when you bump into someone. This might imply that you are telling them to get out of your way. Instead say, "I'm sorry." Do not refuse a figt when offered to you even though you might think it is not necessary or that they cannot afford it. To refuse a gift would be considered very rude.
