Qualitative Research in Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers Inaugural Newsletter Volume 1, Number 1 Spring 2000 Letter from the Acting Chair ... I am very happy to write this letter welcoming all of our new members, and inviting others to join our growing specialty group. To quote from our new by-laws, "The mission of the QRSG is to promote the use and understanding of qualitative research approaches, methods, and tools for the purposes of education, research, and public service in the discipline of geography. The group is further charged with bridging the perceived gap between quantitative and qualitative methods through dialogue, debate, and the establishment of common ground for the purposes of enhancing rigorous research across the spectrum." In the spirit of our mission, we have sponsored or co-sponsored 24 sessions (!!!) at the Pittsburgh AAGs these are listed below (click here to jump to them). The QRSG is also co-sponsoring a workshop on Monday, April 3rd in Pittsburgh (the day before the meetings begin) on the new Nvivo NUD*IST software. Week 13 Day 85: Sunday, July 15, 2001 Went to a family reunion thing in Collingwood today. Collingwood is 2 1/2 hours from Kitchener. Talked to Luke today. Luke's my cousin and we know each other pretty well. Didn't do a whole lot there , though. Tommorow I get to go to Houston. It's going to be very good. Day 86: Monday, July 16, 2001 This was the longest day ever. It felt like a whole week was lived in a single day. Cool stuff happened today. 4:30a- I wake up and My dad and I are ready to drive to YYZ (Toronto Pearson International Airport). Everything is ready to go since we packed our stuff last night. I drive. Traffic is light. All is ok. 5:45a- we go from park'n'fly economy lot to Airport terminal. We're in th airport for about an hour. 7:00a- planes leaves for Pittsburg, PA. I like flying in planes- I get to see the cities and their roads, highways etc. from a different perspective. Metro Toronto really got put into a nutshell this morning when I looked down. It actually looked a lot smaller compared to different times I flew over it and looked down. Spotted many interchanges, such as the 401/410/403 int, 401/400, 401/W.R Allen Rd, 401/427 etc. Later, I was able to get a good aerial view of Youngstown Ohio. I love seeing cities from the sky since I'm so into geography. I have maps of most of the places we fly over when I'm travelling by air. 8:00a- arrival in Pittsburgh. We're in the Pittsburgh Int'l Apt for about 2 hours. We have brekfast there with this lady we met on the plane, who was also headed for Houston. I never thought our flight would be connecting in Pittsburgh. I originally thought we would be going straight to Houston, but I guess I was wrong.

Lafayette is a festive city. It is the capital of a region unlike any other in the United States. Everything is accented by the French history and heritage of the area. It is the heart and soul of the Cajun culture. CAJUN is derived from Acadian. For the Cajun people, the great adventure began in 1755 when Canada changed hands from the French to the British. The French Acadians were uprooted from Acadie, the area which is now Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in eastern Canada, because they refused to swear allegiance to the Anglican church and crown. The Acadians were a very devout people who had left Europe years before to escape persecution for their Catholic beliefs. During the exile, also known as Le Grand Derangement, families were separated and more than half of the Acadians lost their lives. Some of the exiles settled along the eastern seaboard of the United States.However, most Acadian settlers followed the path that led to New Orleans. There they received a hostile greeting from the aristocracy and decided to head west into unsettled territory where they could live their lives according to their own beliefs and customs. The Cajuns were not the only people in the area; the Creoles were also settlers of South Central Louisiana. The Creole culture was based upon a distinct blending of African, West Indian and European cultures. These settlers were strongly influenced by island customs and religions. Descendants of the Creole settlers are still abundant in New Orleans and the eastern portion of South Central Louisiana.

History of Missouri Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet, who descended the Mississippi from the north in 1673, supplied the first written accounts of exploration in Missouri. The early Indians in Missouri were the Osages, Sacs, Foxes, Otos, Iowas, Missouris, Miamis, Kickapoos, Delawares, Shawnees and Kansas. Although named for an Indian tribe, today there are no organized tribes left in Missouri. As part of the Louisiana Purchase territory, Missouri has belonged to three nations: France, Spain and the United States. First claimed for France by LaSalle in 1682, Missouri was ceded to Spain in 1762. Although Spain held the country for 40 years, its influence was slight. The early development of Missouri was closely associated with lead mining. Galena, a lead ore, was first discovered in 1701 near Potosi and began to be mined in earnest in 1720 upon the discovery of significant deposits at Mine La Motte. Mining, the earliest commercial activity in Missouri, lured early French settlers and continues to be a major enterprise today. It was the French who were responsible for the first permanent settlement of Ste. Genevieve in the mid 1730s. This settlement survived alone in the huge Upper Louisiana Territory until the establishment of St. Louis as a fur trading post in 1764. Because of its excellent location where the Missouri River flows into the Mississippi, St. Louis became the largest settlement in the state and today is one of the nation's larger cities.

Today, owing to the development of graphic user interfaces, Internet and on-line media, information technology is becoming available for communication in a much more immediate fashion than before. For me this makes relevant and necessary a phenomenological approach to communication. We are short of a good communication model to understand new modes of Internet communication such as the geographical 3D multi-user domain of Karlskrona2. Personally I prefer the communication environment metaphor which suggest that communication is about to facilitate and to take part in a common space. Karlskrona2 is at least a good visualisation of this metaphor, and I think that this alone will improve the possibility of actually starting debates and communities on the Internet.
