FROM THE P-FILES: Principals Share Parent Involvement Ideas
This month, Education World asked a number of principals to tell us about ways their teachers involve parents in the classroom and the school. Dozens of ideas flooded our e-mailbox! Here we share some of those great ideas! Included: More than 30 practical ideas for including parents across the grades! This month, we asked the principals who are members of Education World's P-Files team (see Calling All Principals ) to tell us about ways their teachers involve parents in the classroom and the school. Dozens of ideas flooded our e-mailbox! Here we share some of those great ideas! Editor's note: The story that follows has dozens of ideas for involving parents in schools. After you read the story, please share your own experiences on a special parent involvement message board You know it in your heart. Open communication between home and school between parents and teachers can only help the kids in your classroom. Informed parents are willing participants; students who know that parents and teachers communicate are more likely to communicate too. You also know that involving parents with schools can be difficult.

No. 16 Fall 1999 1999 Medical Job Fair Links Residents to Facilities The results are in! Based on participant evaluations, the 1999 Medical Job Fair of Louisiana was an overwhelming success. Resident and practicing physicians stated that the Job Fair provided an avenue for evaluating multiple options in one setting. Exhibitors were pleased with the number and quality of the residents attending the fair. The fair attracted several pediatricians from a board review meeting taking place in the Hyatt at the same time. This added to the excitement due to the large demand around the state for pediatricians . The site of the 1999 Job Fair was the Hyatt Regency New Orleans Hotel. The Hyatt was selected due to its proximity to the medical schools and the available exhibit space configurations. Breakout sessions were conducted adjacent to the exhibit hall, allowing participants to move between events easily and with minimal time loss. The layout of food and beverages in the exhibit area proved to be a big hit with exhibitors. Placing food and beverages adjacent to booths increased the interaction between exhibitors and medical participants. Seventy-seven (77) resident and practicing physicians attended the fair. The number of physicians was in line with prior years; 68 in 1997 and 78 in 1996. Approximately 40 residents attended the 1998 fair in spite of the tropical storm that flooded New Orleans during the fair. The 1999 residency programs represented included Alton Ochsner, Tulane, Baton Rouge General, Baylor Family Practice in Houston, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of Texas-Beaumont as well as the following LSU programs; Shreveport, Monroe, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Kenner and New Orleans.

State Improvement Grant Applications Funded in 2001 Louisiana Abstract Basic Information Improvement Strategies Return to Main Page Louisiana Abstract or Conceptual Framework for State Systemic Change The Louisiana State Improvement Grant (LaSIG) presents data that clearly indicate the magnitude of services by students with disabilities and their families, weaknesses or gaps in those services, a need to align reform efforts across and within general and special education; and a need for innovative professional development that will increase the number and quality of personnel.
The Project has three broad outcomes in participating schools and districts:
  • Increase the number quality of general and special education teachers, related service personnel, administrators and other staff; Increase the access to and participation of children and youth with disabilities and their families in appropriate and effective special education services and supports; and Increase and improve the learning results of children and youth with disabilities.
