Mutilated Humanity
Ashley Montagu Presented at The Second International Symposium on Circumcision, San Francisco, California, April 30-May 3, 1991. Perhaps the most profound name ever bestowed upon a species, was that given to human beings by Karl Linnaeus in 1753 in his great book Systema Naturae - namely, Homo Sapiens . Linnaeus briefly epitomized this with the words; "Man, know thyself" ( Homo nosce Te ipsum ). This sounds like an injunction, and it is; but it was also intended to underscore the fact that human beings are the only creatures in the world capable of self-consciousness and contemplation and characterized by an unparalleled creativity. Yet an impartial survey of Homo sapiens ' record since 1753, would suggest that Oscar Wilde, as usual, was on the mark when he said that Homo sapiens was the most premature definition ever given a species. A possible improvement might be, in demotic English, "the wise guy, too clever by far for his own good." Perhaps the more appropriate appellation at this stage of human maldevelopment would be Homo sap , "the addlepated one." Not that the wisdom is not there as a potentiality.

Overview
is a country of 16 million in an area slightly larger than New Mexico and located on the Gulf of GuinŽa in West Africa, bordered by Ghana on the East; Liberia and GuinŽa on the West; Mali on the Northwest and Burkina Faso on the Northeast. Tropical rainforests cover the Southern half of the country and taper into rolling savannahs in the North and rise to mountains in the Northwest. A tropical climate extends inland from the coast and becomes semi-arid in the extreme North. There are three seasons: warm and dry (November-March); hot and dry (March to May); hot and wet (June to October). Deforestation has led to silt pollution of rivers and streams, water pollution from industrial agricultural effluents, and often torrential flooding in the rainy season. Water pollution from sewage is also a problem. Half the population practices traditional African animist religions. Followers of Islam dominate the Northern part of the country, constituting about 28% of Ivoiriennes. Christians comprise 22% of the population, mostly in the South. Christians and Muslims often also practice animism concurrently.
In late 1974, one of the first recording studio/record presses in Africa was opened in Abidjan, prompting an influx of musicians that transformed Abidjan into the West African hub for musical and cultural exhange. Musicians from all over West Africa came to absorb new rhythms, demonstrate their own native beats, and endeavour to be recorded. Demand soon generated construction of additional recording facilities and pressing plants, and the development of a flourishing recording industry.

The similarities and differences between the rise of complex societies in West and East Africa
by Mikey Brass
Two sides of the African continent, involved in two separate economic spheres, are bound to inevitably produce differences between the origins of their complex societies. The influence of the trade networks will vary as well the extent to which the settlements will owe their origins to native or external processes. Yet these self-same processes allow parallels and distinctions to be drawn between the regions under consideration, West and East Africa.
THE INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT OF JENNE-JENO
As a result of McIntosh and McIntosh’s precessual archaeological approach to excavating Jenne-Jeno and its hinterland, it has been demonstrated that instead of developing as a result of the trans-Saharan trade, Jenne-Jeno was an indigenous town possessing much earlier origins (Hall 1996: 221).
THE INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT OF GHANA
Although the Ghana Empire is the earliest historically documented kingdom in the West African Sahel, it is in fact the second complex political system that arose in this area (Munson 1980: 457). The historical records of Ghana come from Arab sources dating between 800 and 1650 AD, but Ghana had been in existence for long before then and was centred in the present-day Sahal region of south-eastern Mauritania and western Mali. (Munson 1980: 457).

MISSIONS Our 2002 Missionary Family
Dr. Chris Feucht
Associate Pastor of Missions Dear Friends and Supporters,
An open door stands before us. Today, people in our world are in turmoil, filled with fear, despair and hopelessness, and they need Jesus more than ever before. The world is waiting to hear the Good News. One way God has allowed New Life to Declare His Glory among the nations is by joining hands with a tremendously dedicated group of missionaries. Many of them have made great sacrifices and taken huge steps of faith to be able to share the Gospel with those who have not heard. We have the privilege of being their partners and sending them to the nations through our prayers and financial gifts. In this booklet you will find the missionaries and ministries whom New Life Christian Fellowship regularly supports. Through our 2002 Grace Giving program you have the opportunity for a personal extension into the world by supporting one or more of the New Life missionaries, ministries or projects listed in this webpage. Won't you prayerfully consider enabling one of these missionaries to Declare His Glory among the nations? You are invited to respond by emailing us.

Festival Distribution Launches New Label
Since Festival Distribution was formed in 1993, it has developed into a vital Canadian distributor of independent folk, roots, jazz and world music. Now it is forming Canada's newest label, Jericho Beach Music. "Festival Distribution has long been building towards having its own label," says Jack Schuller. "Growth and change have built the confidence that the company can promote, manufacture and distribute their own releases effectively. Jericho Beach Music also comes from an existing commitment to independent artists. In the past, we have often helped musicians by investing in recording projects and buying CD's up front. Now we have the infrastructure and expertise to direct a dynamic label." Jericho Beach Music takes its name from the site of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Festival Distribution's roots. The Vancouver festival is renowned for the vitality and diversity of its programming, and for the power of the unexpected musical marriages it spawns.

    Exploring World Music Roots
    By Rich Holly
(Percussive Notes, October 1996) Mandara is a fascinating assemblage of instrumentalists and vocalists from diverse ethnic and musical backgrounds. Their PASIC '96 Showcase Concert will explore the African roots of American music. Included in the presentation will be Dagari music of Upper-West Ghana utilizing traditional xylophone, hand drum and voices, contemporary Shona music for marimba ensemble, and original works that include such styles as South African Mbqanga and Liberian Jibo. In the spirit of music as a unifying force for the world's peoples, Mandara's original music combines marimba, vibes, piano, bass, keyboards trombone, drum-set and vocals with traditional instruments from Ghana, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, South Africa and the Caribbean. "There is so much to be gained, both musically and otherwise by studying the musical activity of the Dagari nation," says Valerie Naranjo, who co-leads Mandara with Barry Olsen. "They successfully take music and other arts beyond the realm of concert and audience directly into the entire community, thereby building a common healing and invigorating language for the people."Naranjo's own love for community music involvement comes from her experiences as a child. As a descendent of Navajo and Ute Native American tribes, she learned and witnessed first-hand how meaningful such experiences can be. "I was fortunate to grow up with the traditions I did." she says. "At weddings and funerals, and for that matter other significant occasions, musicians were called in. These musicians were seen as healers, and this intrigued me."
