83. The Art Of Living: Gyumri Families Turn Museums Into Sanctuaries - ArmeniaWeek

The Art of Living: Gyumri families turn museums into sanctuaries By Nara Markossian
ArmeniaWeek reporter "S hiraz didn't go mad while he was claiming Ararat mountain, however he would go mad if he saw his native Gumri in such a miserable condition," says Gyumri resident Varsenik Pipoian.
Indeed, these days there are well-founded reasons to go mad in Gyumri. But residents like Pipoian have grown tired of knocking themselves against walls, crying and mourning.
They have, instead, adapted themselves to the existing conditions, even confronting 13 years of problems with wry humor.
Which is how the Ananikian family begins explaining its life in an adopted dwelling - the Aslamazian Museum and Gallery.
"We have become the involuntary watchmen of this museum," Alexander Ananikian says. "Everyday we keep the museum under observation to prevent robbery. I don't know why, but the Government doesn't pay us a salary for the work we do."
The 28-year old family man is only half-joking. For 13 years he has lived in the semi-dilapidated museum, where he and his wife are now raising a two-year-old son.
The outer walls of the museum, where the work of the Aslamazian sisters, one a painter and the other a weaver, once were on display, are still standing.

Next Article Living History Museums Author: Anita Gail Cohen-Williams Published on: April 13, 1998 Related Subject(s): Not Indexed This last summer, my family decided to go and visit the East Coast of the United States. As historical archaeologists and avid museum-goers, my husband and I wanted to give our six-year-old daughter a taste of early American/British history. She was quite used to the re-enactments that we do as Spanish-Colonial soldiers and settlers. We found ourselves in Virgina and promptly went off to visit . This is a not-for-profit living history museum that shows how the early settlers in the colonies lived. The Yorktown Victory Center is a separate museum that commemorates the Battle of Yorktown. The re-enactors are all very friendly, and give talks about what they are doing, and why. They try to wear authentic clothing, but speak in the current English so that visitors can understand them. I heartly recommend this museum as it makes history come to life.

Springfield Museums will please the family

But the Springfield Museums at the Quadrangle, 220 State St., host several kid-friendly exhibits to get up close and personal with science and nature. The Quadrangle also has two art museums where visitors are better off keeping their hands to themselves.
