This successful coupling of tourism and heritage has resulted in a revitalized heritage conservation and promotion movement, economic development opportunities in traditionally depressed sectors and a heightened sense of cultural and community identity. To date, museums and their staff have played a central role in providing curatorial, research and public education services to this growing tourism sector. However, as in the ecotourism industry, there is a sector of the cultural heritage tourism market that seeks greater authenticity, more realistic experiences and closer contact with living cultural heritage products. Like the ecotourist who prefers spotting a wolf in the wild to seeing one in a zoo, the demanding cultural heritage tourist values authentic, living cultural heritage experiences over pre-packaged and sanitized versions. Perhaps some readers who have visited Eastern Canada in the spring may have come across a maple syrup producer on a lonely country road and stopped for a chat with him. In the Yucatan, you may be fortunate, if you travel off the beaten path, to run into a chiclero camp and witness for yourself how the campesinos obtain the latex that is used for chewing gum. Most travelers will fondly remember experiences which brought them into direct contact with the people of a place, engaged in their traditional routines.
