Old Dwelling (above) and an Ancient Viking Church Transplanted in the Folkemuseum By M. D. Jones,
Assistant Engineer,
Richmond Sweden and Norway have an old civilization developed during many centuries uninterrupted by historical catastrophe. Those northern countries have never been subdued by foreign races throughout the last 2,000 years, and although their history records terrible and bloody wars, none has been carried deeply into their territories. Their civilization has been spared pillage and destruction and much has been preserved of the early environment and customs. It is through preservation of this heritage that future generations may possess treasures of incalculable historical interest in the form of living museums where the observer may go back for a day and live the life of his ancestors. It is not by mere accident, therefore, that archeology, as well as ethnographical research, has flourished so richly within the boundaries of the northern countries. In many nations, much of the life of early inhabitants has been lost to history, and it has become impossible for new generations to obtain a picture of the progress and appreciate the true character of their people. The preservation of a few houses and their furnishings is good enough to convey an impression of a segment of the life of the past; but such preservation, if supplemented by that of the characteristic environment, affords at once a vivid and authentic picture of early days. Norway and Sweden have built living outdoor museums where the life of early ancestors is preserved for observation and study by the descendants.

Coral reefs are also living museums. Not widely known is that someof the largest individual coral colonies found on US reefs today
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/magazine/stories/mag7.htm
NOAA Magazine NOAA Home Page
As "rain forests of the sea," coral reefs provide humans with living resources and services worth many billions each year, a staggering amount for an ecosystem covering less than one percent of the Earth's surface. In the Florida Keys
  • Coral reefs are vital to U.S. fisheries . Approximately 50 percent of all federally managed fisheries depend on coral reefs and related habitats for part of their life cycle. The annual dockside value of commercial U.S. fisheries from coral reefs is more than $100 million. The annual value of reef-dependent recreational fisheries probably exceeds that.
Coral reefs are often considered the medicine cabinets of the 21st century. They offer great promise for pharmaceuticals now being developed as possible cures for cancer, arthritis, human bacterial infections, viruses and other diseases. And just one million of possibly nine million reef species have been identified. The pharmaceutical value of coral reefs in Jamaica's Montego Bay reef system is calculated to be between $54 and $85 million.
Coral reefs also buffer adjacent shorelines from wave action, helping to prevent loss of life, property damage and erosion.

The following citations are personal recommendations for works that make significant or special contributions to the theory, instruction, and practice of living history interpretation in museums, parks, and historic sites. This is not an exhaustive bibliography. While inclusion signifies that locating and reading these sources is worthwhile, omissions should not be construed as rejection. I have excluded articles from ALHFAM Proceedings perhaps the best single source of literature on living history because they are too numerous for this short list and they are comprehensively indexed in the ALHFAM Proceedings INDEX , which is available online. Likewise, I have found many informative writings in History News , of which only a few are included here.
