My husband is a student of history and for the past 25 years has dragged me into every antique shop, museum, and old book store we have been able to find in British Columbia. At first it was different, exciting. Then it became boring, until he took me to my first Living Museum. Living museums have been called just about anything from a "Historical Site" to "Amusement Park", but I like the term Living Museum, as it most accurately describes what they they to accomplish. In the simplest terms, a living museum can be anything from a single building to an entire town, which has not only been structurally restored, but people volunteer or are hired to role play a character from the era being presented. Asking these actors a question brings to light their knowledge of where and when they are depicting. As an example, we were in a house at the O'Keefe Ranch in Vernon, and my son commented on the "funny looking telephone". Our guide politely explained that her son went to the east to work with Mr. Bell on his invention, which is why they had one of the newest models. It wasn't "funny looking", it was the latest style.

Available Projects: Living Museums How often does a student have the opportunity to do planning for a major museum exhibit, to work with museum professionals, or to participate in the mounting of an exhibit? Under the Living Museums program, WPI students carry out IQP work on a variety of rewarding topics with outstanding museums in New England and at selected sites abroad. Projects are available during the regular academic year and during E-term. Museums synthesize knowledge and combine artifacts with primary and secondary documents, often to create an entire social and physical environment. Living Museums Further tourist information is available from You get a great feeling for early life in a Shetland crofthouse at the Crofthouse Museum, Dunrossness. This restored thatched crofthouse and watermill is as it would have looked in the 1890's. If the smell of the peat smoke is too much for your nose, then take a sniff of the reest or salt fish, the custodians often dry above the fire. Have a go at setting the moose faa while you are there - a very effective trap! While at the South end of Shetland, why not compare the mill at the Crofthouse Museum with the Quendale Water Mill.
