Livestock inspection fees to increase
Media release : 24 June 2002
Livestock inspection charges will increase next month to recover a greater proportion of the costs of providing the service for importers and exporters of livestock. The Department of Agriculture's Manager of Animal Health Ashley Mercy said the increase from 1 July would implement government cost recovery policy and would enable the Department to maintain the on-call service to industry, including remote locations. Mr Mercy said progressive elimination of subsidisation of the cost of such inspections would enable the Department to maintain animal health services aimed at maintenance of the excellent biosecurity status of the State's livestock industries. He said that to offset some of the increase in charges, the cost of call out and initial inspection fees would be shared between owners in cases where there are multiple consignments in one shipment. "This change in the way fees are applied will benefit producers who are moving stock and previously had to pay the full fee for part of a shipment," Mr Mercy said.

Northern agricultural livestock update
Media release : 1 March 2002
The latest information on meat and pasture research will be the focus of the Northern Agricultural Livestock Update to be held at the Mingenew Recreation Centre on 14 March 2002. The Department of Agriculture and the Mingenew-Irwin group will host the event, which will provide producers with the latest research and development, relevant to farm businesses in the region. Development officer Emma Mitchell said it would also be an excellent opportunity for producers, researchers and industry representatives to interact. "Livestock Updates provide a unique opportunity to profile research being pursued in WA, and detail how it would ultimately benefit producers, processors, marketers and other stakeholders in the industry," said Ms Mitchell. "This research forum is timely for the region, with many livestock sectors experiencing solid improvements and the expansion of the livestock industry in the Midwest region," she said. Ms Mitchell said topics of discussion would include an overview of the markets for major meat and live export industries, as well as research profiles on everything from herd management systems to feeding supplements and feed utilisation.

SAFF Media Release
Wednesday, 21 March 2001 Animal Health focus for SAFF Livestock AGM
The SA Farmers’ Federation Livestock Annual General Meeting is to be held next week on Wednesday March 28th as part of the SAFF State Convention at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
Chair of the SAFF Livestock Section, Mr Chris Parker, said the focus of this year’s Livestock AGM would be Animal Health - Australia’s Advantage over the World.
“This is extremely timely considering the recent outbreaks of Foot and Mouth and Mad Cow disease in Europe,” said Mr Parker.
“The keynote speaker, Professor Reuben Rose, Dean of University of Sydney Veterinary School, will be presenting us with information about the challenges facing animal production in the future, and in particular the essential veterinary skills base that will be required to meet our production needs.”
Mr Parker said he was fortunate enough to see Professor Rose's presentation at the Australian Animal Health conference last year in Canberra and found the presentation to be very informative as well as challenging and encouraged all SAFF members to take this one off opportunity to listen to one of the leaders in animal health in this country.
“Animal Health is one of the biggest issues facing livestock producers today. Although Australia has an excellent reputation overseas and a unique livestock health status, the effort required by industry to keep this status is high.

RALEIGH - Participating in the N.C. State Fair livestock shows has been a rite of passage for siblings Brittany and Trey Denning of Bentonville. Three generations of the Denning family have grown up showing livestock at the N.C. State Fair and have also participated in Johnston County 4-H. Their grandfather, Norman Denning Sr. began showing hogs at the fair 55 years ago and father, Norman Denning Jr. started showing when he was 10 years old. Like their father, Brittany and Trey began showing livestock at an early age. Brittany, 14, won the 2001 Johnston County Fair grand champion and reserve champion market level hog categories of the 4-H junior livestock competitions. She has also placed in competitions at the State Fair and is still trying for top honors.

Junior livestock auctions bring a total of $49,000 for youths
RALEIGH - Junior livestock champion and reserve champion winners took home a total of $49,000 at the N.C. State Fair Junior Livestock Auction, Saturday, Oct. 19, with Harris Teeter Supermarkets placing the winning bids on all grand and reserve champion steers, barrows, lambs, and turkeys. "The youngsters showing these animals are the real winners today, because they receive the prize money as well as having pride in knowing they raised blue-ribbon animals," said Agriculture Commissioner Meg Scott Phipps, who presided over the auction. "The total amount of money raised during the auction exceeds last year's totals by almost $9,000, and I want to thank Harris Teeter for its winning bids." Harris Teeter will donate the products from the livestock auction to the Food Bank of North Carolina. They will also collaborate with the Poultry Science Club at N.C. State University to donate the turkey products to Raleigh Urban Ministries.
