Bibliography of Modern Chinese Literature and Film
by Kirk A. Denton
The Ohio State University URL: http://deall.ohio-state.edu/denton.2/biblio.htm This online bibliography is maintained in conjunction with the journal Modern Chinese Literature , which has recently moved its home-base from the University of Colorado to The Ohio State University. The journal is the leading English language forum for scholarship in the field of modern Chinese literature. With the publication of Vol XI, the journal will change its name to Modern Chinese Literature and Culture marking a shift in editorial direction toward a broader cultural studies approach. There are good published bibliographies in the field of modern Chinese literature, but they inevitably suffer from the passing of time. The advantage of an on-line bibliography is, of course, that it can be continuously updated, giving the field up-to-date information about the most current publications. With the assistance of Jeremy Sieg, I put together this bibliography as a resource not just for readers of the journal, but for students, scholars, and general readers interested in the literature and culture of twentieth-century China. The bibliography focuses on English language materials, but also includes important Chinese-language reference works, literary histories, and the like. It is, I believe, the most extensive English-language bibliography of modern Chinese literature. The bibliography is organized into the following sections, to which one can link from the homepage's

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~bakerref/guides/german/dictionaries.htm
Here are a few detailed and very useful bio-bibliographical handbooks for German-language literature and film. They focus on information on individual authors or directors (rather than themes, topics, terminology, etc.).
  • Deutsches Literatur Lexikon: Biographisch-bibliographisches Handbuch . Munich: Francke, 1968-. ("Kosch")
    Location: Baker/Berry Reference Z/2230/K6/1966 Library has vol.1-19
Very comprehensive. Good for relatively unknown authors. Brief biographies, discussion of the authors works, and bibliographies.Covers authors from the early modern period to the twentieth century.
Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartsliteratur . Munich: Text + Kritik, 1978- . ("KLG" on CD-ROM)
Location: Baker/Berry Reference (ask at desk) (also in paper in the German Studies Department)
Focus on post-World War II authors. Great first stop source for contemporary authors. Brief biographies, discussion of the authors works, and bibliographies.
  • Both "Kosch" and "KLG" are good first-stop sources for the advanced student. Kosch covers the entire post-medieval literature, KLG concentrates on contemporary authors. Both are author-oriented and offer biographical sketches, brief assessment of literary merits, and bibliographies of works by and about the author.

Office hours: By appointment Course Description
Since its inception in the 1890s, the cinema has had a close association with literature, and has indeed often borrowed (in source material and technique) from the latter. Yet although ties have existed between the two media, the history of film has seen the development of its own narrative, dramatic, poetic and expository forms. This course will examine both sides of this dynamic: film’s convergence with, and divergence from, literary forms. In particular, we will look closely at central historical and formalistic aspects of literary and cinematic structures and genres; questions of film adaptation in historical, cultural, and social perspective; and historical and present-day censorship issues in literature and film. Because the relationship of film and literature has never existed in cultural isolation, along with our primary texts we will consider other art forms (such as music, painting, sculpture) where appropriate. In addition, we will consult various voices of scholars and critics analyzing the story-making powers, rhetorical “tricks” and other important characteristics of the verbal, visual and imaginative languages of literature and film respectively. The aim of the class is to provide you with broad historical and cultural knowledge about the multi-faceted relationship of film to literature, and literature to film, while also enabling you to gain more detailed insights into the individual literary and filmic texts that we will be considering as examples of this relationship.
