Questions? About Lighthouses? Well, you have come to the right place. Feel free to peruse our most frequently asked questions and perhaps, you may find yours. If you do not find the answer to your question here, please go to the page and send us your query, we will get back to you as soon as possible. 1. How can I purchase a lighthouse? Where can I purchase a lighthouse? The best sources of information to purchase a lighthouse are the regional offices of the General Services Administration (GSA). Links are provided below. Lighthouses can leave Federal government ownership in several ways. The GSA is the Federal government’s real estate broker and normally processes most of the lighthouse sales. Generally a federal, state, or local government entity takes jurisdiction, or there is a legislative transfer to a non-profit historic preservation group. Then, the property may be auctioned to the highest bidder. However, some Federal agencies have the authority to directly dispose of their properties. The Congress of the United States may also enact special laws requiring that one or more lighthouses be transferred to the states or to non-profit organizations. Each lighthouse property

From 1986 to the present, Don and Diana Carter have traveled around the country visiting and photographing lighthouses. During these expeditions, Diana kept a journal detailing their trip and when and where they photographed each lighthouse. Within each journal are links to the entries for the lighthouses visited. Because some lighthouses were visited more than once, the photograph displayed for the lighthouse may not necessarily be a photograph that was taken on that particular trip.

http://www.greatlaker.com/
Welcome to Great Laker Magazine On these pages you'll find a preview of our seventh issue (Winter 2003). Since the magazine made its debut last July, we have signed up well over 4,300 subscribers, proof there is a huge amount of interest in the topics "Great Laker" covers. Published quarterly Great Laker is a glossy, full-color magazine dedicated to exploring all things Great Lakes, from lighthouses to lake boats, legends and lore, to lakes, ports and the wonderful attractions they have for visitors to enjoy. We offer original stories covering many aspects of the Great Lakes scene in one in-depth, well-written and comprehensive volume. In the previous issues, lighthouse writer Dave Wobser has written about lighthouses in the Alpena, Mich., area and explored the world of lighthouse miniatures. Al Miller has visited Duluth/Superior and now fills readers in on the Keewenaw Peninusla. Last summer, Roger LeLievre rode the 1,000-foot vessel James R. Barker and gave readers an exclusive look at life aboard one of these huge vessels. We've published some stunning photos of Great Lakes lighthouses in winter thanks to photographer Wayne Sapulski. Author and shipwreck historian Wes Oleszewski explored the wreck of the tug Katy Reid and took readers on a tour of the historic cement boat J.B. Ford. We've also visited and written about Goderich and Ont. and beautiful Georgian Bay. There's more ... but why not see for yourself?

Introduction
The "Lighthouses of the Great Lakes" are a magnificent collection of history and should be restored, preserved and maintained for all generations to enjoy. Pictures alone can not do these superb structures justice. Over the years, technology has replaced manual tasks with automated systems. With modern navigational systems, such as the Loren-C and the G.P.S. (Global Positioning Systems), the need for lighthouses are now minimal. Ship masters, as well as recreational boaters, can now access these navigational systems to plot their course with the precision of NASA's space programs. The U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Transportation and/or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to excess, grant out, lease out and/or by a direct legislative transfer or lighthouses throughout the United States. Tomorrow, the number of buoy's, markers and lighthouses needed to safely travel our waterways will be "ZERO". Today, we have to save what lighthouses we can, for tomorrow may be too late for many!

William Upjohn Parfet
Friend, Great Lakes Enthusiast
President of The Upjohn Company
Kalamazoo, Michigan The vast regions of fresh water in North America known as the Great Lakes share the same captivating qualities as the salt water counterparts into which they flow. Glacial effects, early exploration, shipping channels, recreational activities and abundant fishing, all characterize the important role the Great Lakes have played in history. Tales of Native American encampments, early settlers, violent storms, shipwrecks, and peaceful vistas and winter ice floes, all add to the lore of the Great Lakes. The most tangible reminder of the varied and evolving development of these fresh water seas is the lighthouses. Constructed originally to mark areas of danger to seafarers, lighthouses were eventually built to designate a safe route for passage. Each lighthouse along the Great Lakes has its own history, its own unique character, its own charm, and its own meaning to those many who venture past either by land or by sea. This book, this compendium of aerial photographs, is the work of John L. Wagner who has devoted the last six years to capturing the essence of the Great Lakes lighthouses from a perspective never seen before.
