Water-Life Life for the Water Lover Five Water poems By George J. Stewart Dedicated to the mariners of the world; those men and women who spend their lives at sea. Dedicated also to those seafarers and seamen of us who have only dreamt of spending our lives at sea These are my five favorites. I suppose it is because I am an absolute Pisces. They are all on the audiocassette tapes and are also available in a small tabletop booklet with three other poems that are frame size. They can be purchased from me on the ORDER PAGE just click on. Water Journey As the tides move and shift with the power of the moon and stars, drawn to the land, then pulled away; So am I. What river next will I cross as I travel the world around? Across the land and oceans wide. Whiff the sweet pungent smells of the harbors and breath the clean fresh air at sea. Feel the oceans to my bones. Watch as the moon dances away and the stars glisten as they roll by. See the heavens clear, far into the galaxies. See the glowing phosphorescent life dance like firefly's at night

86. Life In The Oceans

http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Trails/1551/lamer.htm
By the Sea
Provided by the SeaWiFS Project, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center People are drawn to the edges of the sea. We see the ocean as a small piece of infinity. But, we have been chipping away at this seemingly endless resource. Some of the richest areas of the oceans are the continental shelves and these are also the areas most exposed to pollution. The heaviest contributions originate from people living along the coast - this includes a number of the world's major urban centres - and nutrient-rich rivers emptying into the oceans. Improvements in fishing technology without corresponding improvements in management of the resource have resulted in regional decreases in fish stocks. Like the atmosphere , the oceans help distribute solar energy. Currents are the winds of the ocean. This process also helps to moderate the earth's climate. The oceans hold over 97% of the earth's water . By comparison, available fresh water sources represent .26% of the earth's water. The sea shore , at the border of sea and land, is an important habitat. Salt marshes are very productive for the same reasons.

In each zone, view pictures of the area and its inhabitants, and find information on each animal, its diet, etc. The site includes tips for exploring tide pools, an index of tide pool organisms, and links to tide prediction tables. This is a little text-heavy and is best for grades 3 and above.

Sci/Tech posted December 12, 2002 Titan: Exploring the origins of life by Michelle Thaller PASADENA Our view of the solar system has changed drastically in the last few decades. Take moons, for instance. The word moon implies something small and insignificant, at least compared to a planet. But so many of the moons, especially those around the outer planets, are fascinating and complex worlds unto themselves. Many of the most dramatic environments we know of, as well as some of the best chances for life outside the Earth, exist on the moons of our planetary family. One of the most tantalizing moons is Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. Even among all the fascinating moons in the solar system, Titan is unique: it is the only moon that possesses a significant atmosphere. Not only does it have an atmosphere, but also layers and layers of orange, hazy clouds (the clouds were so thick that when the Voyager Spacecraft flew by in 1980, the surface was entirely concealed.) Titan's atmosphere is actually quite a bit denser than the Earth's, which is really saying something when you consider the low surface gravity on Titan. Most people don't think about the Earth's gravity holding down and compressing the gases of our atmosphere, but that's exactly what happens. The gravity on Titan's surface in only about one tenth of what you feel on Earth, but the air pressure is actually 60 percent greater than what you feel at sea level here. That's a lot of atmosphere!

    http://www.piscoweb.org/what/campuses/ucsc.html
@import url(../../pisco.css); UC Santa Cruz is involved in all the core research projects that characterize PISCO and has taken a lead role in some aspects of the program. Our research focuses on the central California region , primarily the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
    Nearshore Oceanography
The central California region is characterized by three major oceanographic regions with differences in the strength and productivity of their upwelling regimes. North of Monterey Bay, strong nutrient-rich upwelling occurs across a broad continental shelf, resulting in highly productive water that is rapidly transported offshore. South of Monterey Bay along the Monterey Peninsula, upwelling is less pronounced, resulting in more moderate increases in productivity. In contrast, further south along the Big Sur coast, upwelling is strong but the narrow shelf creates conditions of lower nutrients and productivity. Our oceanographic studies are focused on understanding the consequences of these different regimes on rocky shore and kelp forest community dynamics.
    Shoreline Research
Recruitment, Population Replenishment and Community Interactions The range of different oceanographic conditions within the PISCO UCSC region allows us to carry out unique research into the influence of nearshore oceanography on rocky shore and kelp forest communities. Physical processes may govern the onshore transport of larvae and hence rate of replenishment of reef populations, whereas biotic processes such as productivity levels may govern growth rates and survivorship of larvae. In addition to instrumentation, the moorings also have larval settlement collectors at three depths: 21 meters, 7 meters, and the surface. Monthly samples of these collectors enable us to directly measure larval supply as it relates to nearshore oceanographic conditions.
