Liberian Rappers lament the `struggle between brother and brother'
Review by Norm Dixon, Green Left Weekly, 2 June 1999. Hip hop is popular among the youth of Africa, especially west Africa and South Africa, where it is still a grassroots, street-level music of rebellion, protest and struggle. African hip hop has yet to lose its creative dynamism the way its counterpart in the US has as it has been transformed from street art to just another type of commercial pop music.

The Perspective
December 9, 2001 1. Before I proceed any further, permit me to express gratitude to the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) for inviting me, not only to witness but to also participate in activities marking the 37th Anniversary of the Union. I do not know what were the considerations that led to my selection, amongst, so many more important personalities in this country to make a presentation on this memorable day in the life of the PUL. However, there is something unique about this occasion that I must point out before going any further.
2. In 1996, Honorable Blamo Nelson and I were invited to address a special occasion of the Edward Wilmot Blyden Forum. Today, again, we have been invited to address another special edition of the Edward Wilmot Blyden Forum. Perhaps our presence here today is an indication that our first appearance provided reasons for a second appearance. I hope that, today, we will provide reasons for our third appearance. But let me warn you to be cautious about what to expect from us today. You will recall that in 1996, Honorable Nelson and I were both non-government officials and were virtually singing the same chorus. I hope, irrespective of where we are now, the substance of our presentations here today will be for the good of our country as we did five years ago.
3. I have been asked to make a presentation on the topic: " CONSOLIDATING A DEMOCRATIC POLITICAL CULTURE IN LIBERIA TOWARDS 2003 ELECTIONS - PROPECTS AND CHALLENGES OF THE LIBERIAN MEDIA". In the letter that I received from the Secretary General of the PUL, Mr. Malcolm W. Joseph, I was told that the PUL has no doubt that I would "do justice to the topic".

Although absent from American collective memory, Liberia is very much part of the African-American experience and history. It is the closest America has ever come to possessing a colony on the African continent. Now, a new PBS documentary by Nancy Oku Bright, "Liberia: America's Stepchild," takes a look at the small republic, founded by freed American slaves on the coast of West Africa.
The 90-minute documentary recounts the history of Liberia, from the landing of freed slaves to the present, taking note of important milestones of the country's development.
The first group of freed slaves, under the tutelage of the American Colonization Society whose membership included among others James Monroe, future American president, arrived on the West Coast of Africa around 1826. From the British colony of Sierra Leone, they moved east and laid the foundation of what would become Liberia. Twenty years later, the country gained sovereignty(1), named its capital Monrovia, after the U.S. President James Monroe, and modeled its constitution on that of the United States. Its currency was the American dollar and still is today. The flag was and still is a replica of the "Star-Spangled Banner" with one star.
Beyond the difficulties of settling in a land infested by malaria, the freed slaves faced the tasking efforts of mixing with the indigenous African population they encountered. Although "they inter-married," as the narrator says, the newcomers at no point tried to assimilate the culture of the "natives."

36. All About Liberia | Editorial
In some instances, the West, especially America uses western lenses to view developmentin liberia and render judgment on Africa (liberia's) culture and system
http://www.allaboutliberia.com/editorial82.htm
Editorial Opinion Letters News ... Video Agreeing With President Tubman The creation of the Republic of Liberia was an American idea. Actually, there is no need to irk readers with a narrative of how an American NGO, known as the American Colonization Society (ACS) campaigned and championed the establishment of the Liberian state via the repatriation of free Africans from America to their homeland. For the entire is aware that the Republic of Liberia was created by the philanthropic non-governmental American organization (NGO) called the American colonization Society (ACS). Now, what is the crux of the issue? One may ask. For us, the issue here is the misconceptions in some quarters about current Liberia/America relations. Some people out there believe that the United States has never criticized past Liberian presidents except President Charles Taylor. They believe that the American government is criticizing Liberia and does not want to help the country simply because Charles Ghankay Taylor is president of Liberia. Such thinking is wrong. From antiquity, American governments had invariably criticized every Liberian government even long before President William V.S. Tubman became president of Liberia in 1944. Since no human being or institution is infallible, we interpose no objection to criticism provided such criticism is constructive and offers positive alternative for improvement.

890,747 Children Vaccinated in 2001

By: Varney Bawn
September 13, 2002 Minister Peter Coleman Liberia's Health Minister Peter Coleman has disclosed that 890,747 children under five years of age received polio vaccine in 2001. He said the figure represents an increment in the previously estimated number of 735,514 children for the vaccine in Liberia. Dr. Coleman said, the success of the 2001 National Immunization Days (NIDs) in Liberia was due to high level of commitment demonstrated by the Liberian Government toward the exercises. Minister Coleman averred that the Liberian Government was instrumental in galvanizing support from all levels of the society. He made mention of the pivotal roles played by the Ministries of Internal Affairs, National Defense, Education, Gender Development, Information as well as civic society organizations and community leaders in this direction. The Health Minister opined that the continuous involvement of superintendents from the fifteen political sub-divisions of the country in the struggle against the polio disease continues to prove valuable.
