Law in Popular Culture Collection - E-texts 17 Illinois Law Review 26 (1922) A LIST OF ONE HUNDRED LEGAL NOVELS B Y J OHN H. W IGMORE . And what, pray, is a 'legal' novel? For there have surely
not been many illegal novels. The illegalities in which the great
novelists have figured have commonly been not suits for libels
committed by them, but gallant struggles (like those of Charles
themselves (like poor Cooper) against envenomed reviewers.
A 'legal' novel, as here meant, will be simply a novel in which
a lawyer, most of all, ought to be interested, because the principles
or the profession of the law form a main part of the author's theme.
As for any definition or further subdividing of the 'legal'
novel, it is perhaps unprofitable and certainly difficult, being decidedly
open to difference of taste and opinion. Nevertheless, for those who care to pick and choose, there may be noted, in the rough, four kinds: (A) Novels in which some trial scene is describedperhaps including a skilful cross-examination; (B) Novels in which the typical traits of a lawyer or judge or the ways of professional life , are portrayed;

Their trial and conviction in 1921 in Dedham, Massachusetts for a payroll robbery and murder began an odyssey through the labyrinths of the Massachusetts legal system that not only transformed the legal landscape in Massachusetts, but had a significant influence on 20th century thought and literature with regard to the fairness and integrity of the American justice system. Many of the most influential personalities of the twentieth century were directly involved in or were affected in some way by this case. The case and the ordeal of the two men who served seven years on death row before their execution had a great impact in realms other than the legal. During the 1920's, the Sacco Vanzetti case sparked demonstrations in major cities throughout the world. It inspired many artists and writers such as Upton Sinclair, John Dos Passos, Edna Vincent Millay, Gutzon Borglum, and Ben Shahn, to produce enduring works of art. New plays, paintings, operas, and all sorts of literature are still emerging in the years since the execution of the two men. They left an indelible mark on the history of the labor movement in America an around the world.

Early 12th century Macrobius. These include Year Books, Registers of Writs, Statutes, Legal Treatises, Precedent Books and Commonplace Books. Among chronicles there is an uncollated early 13th century manuscript of Roger de Hovedon's Historia Anglorum , which once belonged to the Abbey of Rievaulx. There is also a long range of Journals of the House of Commons, some of which contain entries which were no longer decipherable when the printed version of the Journals was made. Among noteworthy manuscripts there is an early 12th century Macrobius, and the earliest known Books of Forms in Ecclesiastical Causes, from the end of the 13th century. Growth of the built-up area

During the Hussite Wars the city remained faithful to King Zikmund, and the Hussites twice laid siege to the city, in 1428 and 1430, both times in vain. The first diplomatic talks were held in Brno, which led to the Treaty of Basle. In 1454 King Ladislav Pohrobek expelled the Jews from the city, and they resettled in the area that is now Krenova Street. During the reign of King Jiri of Podebrady Brno supported his adversary Matthias Corvinus, who in Moravia was acknowledged as King of Bohemia. During both civil wars in the 15th century, the number of buildings fell and business dropped. German Technology School est. 1873, Czech Technology School est. 1899). At the turn of the 20th century the problem of nationalism reached its height between the Czech and the German inhabitants; the majority German representation in the city administration ended in 1919. During the First Republic Brno was the second city after Prague - both in terms of its population (1921: 210 000, 1937: 300 000), and also in importance, as it was the capital city of the Moravia/Silesia Province. It was during this period that the Masaryk University was established (1919), and the Brno Fairgrounds were opened in 1928 with an exhibition of contemporary culture. The city was not only a centre of industry and commerce, but also of education and culture. Famous personages who have worked in the city include Leos Janacek, Viktor Kaplan, Jiri Mahen and Bohuslav Fuchs.
