Education: the Gordian knot Shortfalls in schooling are at the root of inequality
Income by years of education (graph)
By PETER BATE If you want to find a root cause for Latin America's income inequality, you don't have to look much further than its skewed educational system. A report issued on the eve of the April Summit of the Americas in Santiago, Chile, found that the region's public schools are mired in crisis. Rather than contributing to progress, the report stated, they are reinforcing poverty, perpetuating inequality and holding back economic growth. The report, which was prepared by a task force of education experts from Western Hemisphere nations, described the split personality of Latin America's educational system: "Students from the region's top private schools perform at levels comparable to schools in industrialized countries. . . Public school students, in contrast, perform dismally by any standard. Latin America's future will be bleak until all its children are provided real opportunities for decent education." How could a worthy social undertaking like public education go so wrong? This is one of the questions plumbed in

By Veronica Fern Since September 11, 2001, our country has undergone much turmoil as a result of the horrific events of that day. This was apparent at our schools, where teachers and students struggled to make sense of the senseless and to relieve the feelings of helplessness that seemed to plague us all. At Horace Mann Academic School, students built a Latino-style altar dedicated to peace with messages of support for the victims and their families. At Visitacion Valley Middle School, students took up a collection of pennies to raise money for survivors in New York, which they presented to the Fire Department. At Monroe Elementary, students wrote letters to President Bush (see below) expressing their hopes and fears for the world. Superintendent Ackerman, speaking at the Day of Prayer and Remembrance said, "it is important that as we express our sorrow for the evil acts of a few men, that we not blame any of our citizens. To the staff, students and parents of San Francisco Unified School District, irrational blaming or attacks on our students or teachers will not be allowed...Let's show the world that we know how to grieve and treat each other with respect...Let us show compassion to our Arab and Muslim neighbors. There is no place for misguided anger...SFUSD is a place where all children and staff are to be safe. We are all accountable to make that happen. If there are any random acts, let them be random acts of kindness."

Ask students to brainstorm a list of singers who perform Latin American music popular in the U.S. (Possibilities might include Ricky Martin, Enrico Iglesias, Mark Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Selena, Gloria Estefan, and others.) What characteristics do these performers, or their songs, share? Try to come up with a way to identify what makes Latin American music distinctive. Explain to students that Latin American music actually comprises several distinctive styles, among them bolero, salsa, son, rumba, tejano, guaracha, merengue, and bachata. You can hear sound clips of many of these styles by visiting the Putamayo Web site at http://www.putamayo.com/ . Additional sound clips and textual information are available on the PBS Buena Vista Social Club Web site at http://www.pbs.org/buenavista/music/index.html

Latino - Hispanic Heritage
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year in the United States from September 15 to October 15.
Easier - One's heritage is the customs and traditions that are handed down from generation to generation through their families. A person with Latino heritage means that they are descendants of a family from Mexico, Central America, or South America. The term Hispanic means people who come from a country where Spanish is spoken. Harder Many Latinos in the U.S. are descendants of Mexican people who lived in the Southwest when it was appropriated as spoils of war or purchased in a series of land sales. In many cases, their ancestors became Americans not by their own choice. Almost all other American Latinos or their ancestors migrated here from Latin America. As a group, Latinos represent a mixture of several ethnic backgrounds, including European, American Indian, and African. Axteca
