CHAPTER VIII General Military Relations With Latin America The Buenos Aires conference adopted principles of far-reaching significance. The United States and the other American republics foreswore individual intervention in each other's internal or external affairs of any sort and for whatever reason. The conference also approved a Declaration of Principles of Inter-American Solidarity and Cooperation, which stated that "every act susceptible of disturbing the peace of America affects each and every" American republic and "justifies the initiation of the procedure of consultation." Two years later the Declaration of Lima reaffirmed the intention of the American republics to support each other in case of any non-American attack on any one of them and provided specifically, when an emergency arose, for assembling their foreign ministers to decide on policies and plans for common action. Such meetings took place at Panama in October 1939, following the outbreak of war in Europe; at Havana in July 1940, following the defeat of France; and at Rio de Janeiro in January 1942, after Japan's attack plunged the United States into the war. Despite the stresses of the international situation and its own growing military preponderance, the United States by means of these conferences managed to maintain with rather remarkable fidelity the principles of the Good Neighbor policy in its arrangements with the Latin American nations for hemisphere defense.

Health Partnership Program (HPP) Fact Sheet OVERVIEW The Health Partnership Program (HPP) is a diversity outreach initiative established by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The HPP aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with rheumatic, musculoskeletal, and skin diseases and their complications, which disproportionately affect African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders. The HPP concentrates on four key areas: (1) public health education, (2) patient care, (3) access to clinical investigations, and (4) recruitment to research careers. The underlying theme of the HPP is collaboration with communities for better health in rheumatic, musculoskeletal, and skin diseases. PURPOSE The purpose of the initial local HPP is to work together with community leaders and organizations representing the African American and Hispanic/Latino communities in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area to develop a model community-based program that will begin to address the disparities in arthritis and other rheumatic diseases in these communities. The HPP provides access to current scientifically based health information and quality health care through preventive and treatment services. In the next stages, the local HPP will focus on other diseases within the NIAMS mission and additional minority communities.

57. Naz Latina
Contrary to general perception, latin americans continue to arrive inthe UK all the time, in large numbers and from all walks of life.
http://www.naz.org.uk/latina/latinaintro.html
Naz Latina It is estimated that there are over 200,000 Latin Americans living in London. However while there are many cultural groups, there are still no specific community based organisations in London that cater for their social, legal and human rights. Contrary to general perception, Latin Americans continue to arrive in the UK all the time, in large numbers and from all walks of life. The spread of the AIDS epidemic in Latin America is reflected in these communities in London. Women and men can be working in the sex industry without any friends or family at home being aware of it. This group is, by definition, hard to reach with safe sex advice and treatment options. So it is all the more important to reach out to them with material that is linguistically and culturally appropriate. Naz Latina seeks to increase awareness of Latin American cultures amongst health care professionals. They provide training for STI clinic staff at hospitals throughout London. Naz Latina began in 1997 and was officially launched at the London Lighthouse in May 1999 to meet an urgent need. The project plays a vital role in meeting the sexual health needs of Latin Americans in London, serving the Spanish speaking community.

NCRR was founded in 1980 by Nikkei (Japanese Americans) from across the country. They held the firm belief that our community had to come together to fight for proper redress for what our government did to Nikkei during World War II.
The members were united around five founding principles:
1. To call for $25,000 monetary compensation for each individual who suffered deprivation of liberty during the War;
2. To push for a community trust fund to repair at least some of the damage to our communities brought on by the exclusion and internment;
3. To work toward overturning the wartime court cases of Fred Korematsu, Gordon Hirabayashi, and Min Yasui;
4. To educate the general public about this tragedy so as to prevent such events from happening again;
5. To support similar campaigns against injustice.
NCRR has steadfastly followed these guiding principles since 1980. We worked with the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the National Council for Japanese American Redress (NCJAR), and the Nikkei members of Congress to win passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 (CLA).
But foremost has been our drive to empower the grassroots community, to help give voice to Japanese Americans who felt that they had nothing to say or that what they did have to say was not important.

Latin America's rising anti-globalisation movement
Stephen Marks 2001-02-28 In shanty towns outside Buenos Aires, the French-Argentine water company Aguas Argentinas has “encouraged” communities to voluntarily dig ditches and lay pipes to connect their homes to the water mains. Privatised water companies like this arrangement as they don't have to worry about unions insisting on the workers getting paid or demanding that engineering and environmental standards are followed. These sorts of neoliberal polices have created massive unemployment in Latin America. Privatisation and the accompanying policies of cutting back government services and industry deregulation, have destroyed the living standards of people so much that a growing anti-globalisation movement is starting to say “enough”. In Argentina, Fernando de la Rua, the centre-left president, faced general strikes in June and November last year. The unions have become increasingly militant and united in their opposition to his neoliberal “reforms”. Another 36-hour general strike has been called for March 1 to demand a wage rise, restoration of workers' health and pension benefits and economic reactivation. The extent of popular resentment is shown by the fact that even Catholic Church leaders have become critical of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
